Penney Building Johnson Name of Property County 130 S. Dubuque Street Iowa City Address City 7. Narrative Description As described in the 2001 survey, the building formerly located at 130 S. Dubuque Street was a one-story brick commercial building constructed in 1957-58 on a site that previously held six separate buildings. The building had a flat roof and shallow parapet. A recessed area along DubuInque Street was set back approximately 6-ft. beneath a stucco clad overhang that originally contained the signage for the department store that occupied the building. Square columns supported the overhang and large plate glass display windows formed a wall of glass in this set- back area wrapping the southwest corner of the building. The entrance included two sets of double plate glass and metal doors. Additional windows were included along the west wall north of the entrance. The building was approximately 37-ft. across the front with a depth of 80-ft. Architect for the building was Henry Fisk of Iowa City. The J.C. Penney Building was demolished in ca.2003 and replaced with the present building. The Wedge restaurant moved into the building on S. Dubuque in 2008, remaining there through about 2014. The building was a city-owned property that was an extension of the Iowa City Public Library. After some months of vacancy, the building became MERGE, a City-University collaboration. MERGE occupied the building beginning after 2015. 01. Image - 2017 (Image by AKAY Consulting August 2017) This building replaced the 1957-58 J.C. Penney in 2003. 8. Statement of Significance The J.C. Penney Building was an example of a late 20th century department store building that replaced a series of earlier buildings. Prior to its construction in 1957-58, the site held six separate buildings. The corner building held the Rummelhart and Brothers grocery store from ca.1904 until ca.1915. Whetstone’s Drug Store No. 2 operated from the corner during the 1930s. By 1940 the 1940s #126 through #130 housed the Switzer Café, Leonard’s Jewelry Store, Condon’s Fur Shop and Gibb’s Drug Store at the corner where Whetstone’s had been located. In the 1950s prior to the construction of the new building, #126 - #130 S. Dubuque Street housed the Hock-Eye Loan Shop, the Mars Café, Leonard’s Jewelry Store, Condon’s Fur Shop, and Gibb’s Drug Store. In 1958 the J.C.
