7. Property Description
The Vogel House (condominiums) was constructed in 2001 on the site of a 1898 residence of the same name. The
first Vogel House (52-01948) was a Classical Revival residence constructed at time when a number of second
generation dwellings was appearing on the fringe of the downtown. At the time of its demolition, the 1898 Vogel
House was considered a rare example of a residential building surviving in the CBD. The building was razed to
accommodate construction of the present Vogel House.
The Vogel House is a seven-story reinforced and concrete block building with a dark brick veneer. The building
façade is characterized by the expansive use of glass in a skeletal steel structure juxtaposed against the dark brick
mass. Further, the building’s roofline runs at an angle, creating an interior lofted space on the 7th floor and posing
a dramatic form on the primary elevation. The building has retail space on the ground level (AKAR Art Gallery),
the entrance to which is located on the façade. The storefront is fully glazed with a two-leaf entrance and a fixed,
rigid steel canopy stretching ¾ of the storefront. A second entrance (also with double doors and a steel canopy)
provides access to an elevator lobby. Set within the plane of the dark brick, the elevator lobby is lit by a series of
stacked windows.
As a corner building, the secondary elevation fronting Gilbert Street is fully articulated. Like the façade, the east
elevation is dominated by glazing, though the skeletal character against a brick mass is not employed here.
Rather, the windows are configured with a large, fixed pane set above a pair of smaller awning windows; frames
are steel. The window configurations are arranged in pairs, each pair separated by wall plane that is finished in an
undetermined material. The storefront level is similarly arranged, though the window configurations lack the
paired awning windows. An entrance is situated at the south end of the elevation, adjacent to the alley. A fixed,
rigid steel canopy provides protection at the entrance.
