Dubuque Street Iowa City Address City 7. Narrative Description The Jefferson Cafeteria building is a one-story, brick, commercial building located on the S. Dubuque Street section of the pedestrian mall; the façade (east-facing) fronts the mall. The building is comprised of the original, ca.1915 brick building with a section of infill (date undetermined) abutting the Jefferson Hotel building on the north. The building features a simple, commercial front with historic decorative devices limited to a simple, brickwork cornice and cast stone parapet coping. The historic brick of the façade is retained framing the contemporary storefront. The storefront is arranged with a recessed entrance located near the south (a narrow display window is located between the doorway and the south edge of the storefront). A large display area, composed of two windows with a brick bulkhead, fill the remainder of the historic storefront (marked on the north by a brick pier). The one-story, steel and glass infill extends from the brick pier to the south wall of the Hotel Jefferson building. The historic character of the historic storefront is camouflaged by a contemporary, rigid, fixed awning that extends the width of the historic building. Although the historic façade remains visible above the awning and in the storefront framing (piers and bulkhead), the black tone and scale of the awning makes the awning the dominant feature of the façade. It should be noted that the awning is similar in appearance to those used over the storefronts of the Hotel Jefferson; the hotel property and the Jefferson Cafeteria building currently share the same property owner. Images from the 1970s suggest the awning dates to that era (Image 02). Image 01. View looking west across S. Dubuque (Ped Mall) (Image by AKAY Consulting, April 2018.) Dubuque Street has been altered from the historic to a degree that prevents individual eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. However, the resource retains its historic form (albeit with the addition of a glass infill addition) and significant façade and storefront elements. As a result, the Jefferson Cafeteria is considered a contributing resource to a potential historic district. The building is significant under Criterion A in association with the history of commerce in the Iowa City downtown (2018). Historic Background A brick building is first recorded on fire insurance maps at this location in 1888, with the first notable alteration to the footprint appearing on the 1920 fire insurance map; in 1920, a wood frame addition at the rear of the 1888 building footprint was gone. Instead, the building extended to the rear (west), doubling the depth of the 1888 brick building. Also, a one-story, brick section with an angled wall (retained today) is located at the rear of the building. In 1901 the building was occupied by a barber, which remains the case through at least 1915. In 1918 the building occupant was the Jefferson Cafeteria. Figure 01. The 1920 fire insurance map reflects the ca.1915 alteration of the building (indicated). Said change was likely a full construction in the aftermath of the October, 1912 fire that destroyed the Metropolitan Block just north of this building. It is not fully unstood whether the building at 109 S. Dubuque St. was constructed in ca.1888 and extended to the west in ca.1915 or if the ca.1888 building was completely replaced in ca.1915 by the present building. However, the October, 1912 fire, which destroyed the 1860 Metropolitan Block and led to the 1913 construction of the Hotel Jefferson, may well have damaged or destroyed the nearby, ca.1888 building at 109 S. Dubuque Street. The timing of the change in the footprint certainly points to that likelihood. As a result, the current building has been dated at ca.1915. The building remained occupied by food service businesses through the 1920s, after which time as series of business types were located there. In 2017, the building is occupied by longtime occupant, Textiles, which is a women’s clothing store.
