7. Property Description
This 2006 building was constructed on the site of the 1941 Kelly Oil Service Station (52-00759), which was razed
to allow the new construction. The 2006 building is a two-story, freestanding, brick clad building with an L-
shaped footprint. The hip roof is clad with standing-seam steel. Sited on a corner lot, the building has two primary
elevations, south and west. The building’s first story houses a mailing service and the second story serves as
residential living. The main entrance to the first story is positioned on the west side of the building, S. Linn Street.
The building is finished completely in brick with cast concrete details (window headers, beltcourse, and
watertable) and the second story contains balconies on both the south and west sides of the building.

8. Statement of Significance
This building is an example of an early 21st century building type that grew in popularity in downtown Iowa City
as housing demand of university students continued to rise making the construction of apartments over
commercial spaces an accepted practice once again. Its recent construction prevents this building from being
individually eligible for the National Register under Criteria A and C. For similar reasons would not be
considered a contributing structure to a potential historic should such a district exist.
