HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-05-07 Proclamationi CITY OE IOWA CITY www.icgov.org May 7, 2019 ATTACHMENTS: Description Bike to Work Week Proclamation Item Number: 3.a. 1 Zit 'fret II1, J' City of Iowa City, Iowa 1 PROCLAMATION Whereas,the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of transportation, recreation, and fitness; and Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as National Bicycle Month. Now, therefore, I, Jim Throgmorton, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of May 13-19, 2019,to be Bike to Work Week in Iowa City, IA, and encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store, to the park,to school, and with friends and family to promote the many benefits achieved from bicycling. Description International Day Against Homophobia Transphobia and Biphobia proclamation vt.4 Jai •4 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION f� t� Whereas, May 17th is the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia and was first observed in 2004; and Whereas, May 17th has established itself the single most important date for LGBTI communities to mobilize on a worldwide scale; and Whereas, the Day represents an annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, opinion leaders and local authorities to the alarming situation faced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people and all those who do not conform to majority sexual and gender norms; and Whereas, the date of May 17th is now celebrated by more than 130 countries; and Whereas, these mobilizations unite millions of people in support of the recognition of human rights for all, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression; and Whereas, the Iowa City Human Rights Commission and Iowa City Pride encourages community members to reflect on the ongoing struggle for equality members of the LGBTI community face and celebrate the contributions that enhance our city. City of Iowa City' Proclamation f(d til r Whereas, May 12th, 2019 is the eighth Kids to Parks Day organized and launched by the National Park Trust held annually on the third Saturday of May; and Whereas, Kids to Parks Day empowers kids and encourages families to get outdoors and visit America's parks; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City maintains 50 parks that offer space for active play, reflection in nature, and community gathering; and Whereas, Iowa City Parks and Recreation staff believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn outdoor recreation skills such as how to swim, how to bike safely and how to play in the outdoors; and Whereas, it is important to introduce a new generation to our nation's parks because of the decline in Park attendance over the last decades; and Whereas, we should encourage children to lead a more active lifestyle to combat the issues of childhood obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia; and Whereas, Kids to Parks Day is open to all children and adults across the country to encourage a large and diverse group of participants; and Whereas, Iowa City Parks & Recreation will co-host a family bicycling event, The Trueblood 100 Family Bike Ride, on Sunday, May 12th from 1-6 p.m. at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area; and Now, therefore, I, James A. Oji ' City of Iowa City �� ' PROCLAMATION 11, Whereas, the staff of the Iowa City Public Works Department focus on infrastructure, facilities, and services that are of vital importance to a sustainable and resilient community and to the public health, high quality of life and well-being of the City of Iowa City; and Whereas, these infrastructure, facilities and services could not be provided without the dedicated efforts of our public works professionals who are responsible for maintaining, improving and protecting our transportation, water supply, water treatment and solid waste systems, public buildings, and other structures and facilities essential for our community members; and Whereas, it is in the public interest for the community members and civic leaders in Iowa City to gain knowledge of and maintain a progressive interest and understanding of the importance of public works and public works programs; and Whereas, the year 2019 marks the 59th annual National Public Works Week sponsored by the American Public Works Association and it should be recognized as "Public Works —It Starts Here". Wil -' C t«- :is...ow 44 II City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION 1,1, Whereas, Iowa City includes a growing number of older Americans who enrich our community through their diverse life experiences; and Whereas, Iowa City is committed to strengthening our community by connecting with and supporting older adults, their families, and caregivers and acknowledging their many valuable contributions to society; and Whereas, Iowa City recognizes the importance of bringing together all generations and engaging in activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being for the benefit of all; and Whereas, Iowa City can enhance the lives of older Americans in our community by promoting home- and community-based services that support independent living; involving older adults in community events and other activities; and providing opportunities for older adults to work, volunteer, learn, lead, and mentor.
