MWII - East Side Recycling CenterCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #07-19 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker II – East Side Recycling Center Department: Public Works Division: Resource Management Supervisors: Resource Management Superintendent Job Summary Under general direction, assists with performing general landscaping duties, building maintenance and cleaning at the East Side Recycling Center. Performs specialized construction, modifications and installation of landscaping and recycling components. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Operates and maintains oil shed, compost and wood mulch distribution area. Maintains recycling bins; controls litter. Disposes of recycled oil, oil filters and antifreeze. Performs grounds maintenance by watering, weeding and mulching landscaped areas. Plants and prunes shrubs and other plants. Controls invasive species, noxious weeds and trees. Collects and disposes of weedy and pruned debris. Mows grass around buildings; cleans floors, carpet, tables, chairs, kitchen and bathroom in the Environmental Education Center. Removes trash from buildings; stocks buildings with cleaning supplies, toilet paper, towels and other necessary supplies. Performs routine checks of plumbing, electric, electronic and other operating systems of the Environmental Education Center. Operates snow plow and blowers to remove snow in winter months. Constructs landscaping features; repairs green wall and eroded areas. Meets with on-site partners and the general public regarding basic questions and complaints. Communicates with supervisors on issues regarding public and partner complaints. Ass ists the Sustainability Coordinator and the Recycling Coordinator with projects as needed. Transports recycle bins to Republic Services for drop off of materials. Participates in safety committee and identification of workplace hazards. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties as assigned. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme cold and vibration and confined space. The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. Six months experience in building and ground maintenance required. Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required. Valid Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements required within 30 days of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification None specified. Skills in the operation of mowers, brush cutters and other landscaping equipment. Skills in computer operations. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals. Ability to perform basic cleaning duties. Ability to prepare written instructions and work records.
