HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWIII - Lead Street SweeperCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #11-01 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker III – Lead Sweeper Operator Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traffic Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering Job Summary Under general direction, operates a street sweeper as a primary duty. In charge of sweeper program. Assists the Assistant Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering with special sweeper events. Responsible for storm water program. Performs work of moderate difficulty and of a physically demanding nature in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets. Performs related work as required. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Sweeps and flushes streets. Coordinates and monitors all sweeper program duties; assists in coordination of special sweeper events; monitors storm water program. Performs periodic preventive maintenance on equipment and daily light maintenance on equipment. Performs safety checks on sweepers and other equipment. Plans routes; supervises and inspects other sweepers, operators and routes. Performs daily sweeper maintenance such as grease, fill water, filters changes and brooms. Provides sweeper program related information to storm water program. Builds and repairs bridge railings, wing walls and catch basins. Removes concrete from streets and replaces sub-base and sets forms; pours and finishes concrete. Relays hot asphalt to City streets for maintenance activities; repairs asphalt streets; constructs and repairs sidewalks. Operates heavy equipment including end loader, tractors, motor grader, bulldozer, rollers, backhoe and dump trucks. Assists in removing snow, ice and leaves from roadways Job Class #11-01 Streets & Traffic Engineering Page 2 Updated 01/16/2020 Assists in road oiling and chipping, cutting of trees and brush. Removes trees and brush from bridge piers, creek banks and along roadsides. Cleans and maintains equipment used in street repairs and construction. Assists in training, delegating and monitoring the work activities of employees involved in street repairs, as assigned. Determines materials and staffing appropriate for assigned job; orders materials. Manages and adheres to work zone safety areas and rules. Performs on-call duties. Designs and fabricates new equipment to accomplish tasks. Participates in preparation for special events such as road races, parades and block parties. Works with outside contractors on any City project like storm clean-up. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties, as assigned. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, explosives and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years of experience in street maintenance including sweeper operation and machinery maintenance required. Must live within 17 miles of the corporate Job Class #11-01 Streets & Traffic Engineering Page 3 Updated 01/16/2020 limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Valid Iowa Class B commercial driver's license with satisfactory driving record required. Valid Iowa Class A commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre- employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Three years of experience in street sweeping preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of use and care of a variety of hand tools and equipment. Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques used in maintenance and construction activities and knowledge of occupational hazards and proper precautions. Skills in sweeper operations and machinery maintenance. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
