Electrician - WastewaterCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #11-12 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Electrician - Wastewater Department: Public Works Division: Wastewater Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Wastewater / Wastewater Superintendent Job Summary Under general direction, maintains and repairs electronic and industrial electrical control systems and electrical distribution systems in the W astewater division. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Maintains and repairs motor control centers and electrical distribution systems at the City’s wastewater treatment plant and lift stations. Performs operational checks on electric motor control panels and instrumentation equipment. Operates and repairs electronic and electrical test equipment used for diagnostic and trouble shooting. Calibrates gas detectors, flow meters and other electronic sensors. Assists in design and installation of new electrical and electronic systems. Assists in intergrating new equipment with existing controls. Assists in re-design and installation of improvements to existing controls. Assists in research and coordinates repairs and changes with plant staff, equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Assists in the design and implementation of preventive maintenance programs for electrical and electronic equipment. Assists in updating PLC and VFD programming to meet changing operational needs. Maintains accurate records of work performed including electrical one line drawings of new and existing electrical systems. Maintains parts and materials documentation and inventory. Assists with other divisional electrical or electronic instrumentation needs. Performs general housekeeping, shop and vehicle maintenance. Job Class #11-12 Wastewater Page 2 Updated 01/16/2020 Performs electrical work in compliance with local, state and national codes. Maintains inventory and requisitions replacement items. Performs on-call duties, as assigned. Responds to wastewater plant and lift station equipment emergency calls. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock; darkness or poor lighting; and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. Three years of experience as an industrial electrician required. Journeyman Electrical License required. Valid Iowa Class B commercial driver's license with airbrakes endorsement with satisfactory driving record required. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Associate degree in a related field from an educational institution accredited by a DOE recognized accreditation body or additional training beyond high school preferred. Master Electrical License preferred. Instrumentation and programming training preferred. Job Class #11-12 Wastewater Page 3 Updated 01/16/2020 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the theory, practice, and equipment used in electrical trade. Knowledge of City and National electrical codes and the rules and standards pertaining to industrial electrical construction and the maintenance of electrical equipment. Skills in the use of a platform lift truck, a utility truck, and various hand and power tools. Ability to read electrical schematics, technical manuals, and training materials. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, measure, and calculate electrical formulas. Ability to prepare written records and documentation.
