HomeMy WebLinkAboutElectronics Technician - WastewaterCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #12-03 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Electronics Technician - Wastewater Department: Public Works Division: Wastewater Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Wastewater / Wastewater Superintendent Job Summary Under general direction, maintains, repairs, designs, installs and programs electronic and electrical control systems and electrical distribution systems in Wastewater Treatment division. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Maintains control and supply systems at the City's wastewater treatment facilities; troubleshoots and analyzes hardware and software failures of wastewater treatment control and distribution systems. Operates and repairs electronic/electrical test equipment, PLC programming, VFD programming and electrical hand tools. Calibrates gas detectors, flow meters and other electronic sensors. Adapts, designs and installs new systems; integrates new equipment with existing controls; redesigns and installs improvements to existing controls. Researches and coordinates repairs and changes with staff, equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Designs and implements preventive maintenance of equipment; updates programming to adapt or expand to changing needs. Functions as lead worker on specific projects related to electrical work; assigns specific tasks, checks work for completeness and safety; trains staff in specific electrical tasks and in general concepts and theory of electricity. Coordinates electrical work including new circuits and new replacement equipment and wiring with process operators and mechanical maintenance work teams. Provides technical services in design and consultation within and outside department and division. Participates in safety committee work, trains others in safe electrical operations. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties as assigned. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, explosives and communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification High school degree or equivalent required. Four years of experience as a process control electrician or electronic technician required. Journeyman Electrical License required. Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required. Valid commercial driver’s license instruction permit required within 90 days of hire. Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Associate degree in a related field from an educational institution accredited by a DOE recognized accreditation body or additional training beyond high school preferred. Master Electrical License preferred. Instrumentation and programming training preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the theory, practice and equipment used in electrical trade. Knowledge of City codes and the rules and standards pertaining to the electrical construction and the maintenance of electrical equipment. Knowledge of process control methods. Skills in operating hand and power tools specific to trade. Ability to troubleshoot using elementary schematic and ladder diagrams and adapt and design. Ability to read electrical schematics, technical manuals and training materials. Ability to calculate electrical and electronic wire size, amp loading, volt drop and other properties. Ability to prepare written records and draw and adapt wiring diagrams.
