Position Title: Maintenance Worker I – Athletic Fields

Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs work in the maintenance of athletic facilities and grounds and
performs other related work as required.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Repairs, installs, designs and manages irrigation systems related to athletic facilities and other City
facilities.
Manages turf in athletic fields, grounds and other City facilities.
Operates equipment related to athletic facilities and grounds.
Trains hourly employees in safe operation of equipment related to athletic facilities.
Assists in scheduling of events and assigns staff duties based off events.
Maintains and repairs electrical equipment and facility plumbing.
Performs general carpentry as needed.
Fills in for Senior Turfgrass Specialist as needed; supervises hourly staff and community service
workers as required.
Maintains digital log of maintenance.
Maintains good communication between workers and departments
Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace
and community.
Performs all other related duties as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands
to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear.
The employee frequently is required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to
sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move
more than 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close
vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne
particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious
places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme heat and risk of electrical
shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
One year of experience in repair, installation of irrigation systems and management of athletic facilities
required. Or an equivalent combination of training or experience required. Must receive Certified
Pesticide Applicator within six months of hire. Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with airbrakes
endorsement and satisfactory driving record required. Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with
airbrakes endorsement required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing
requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen
is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience and Certification
Associate degree in sports turf management from an educational institution accredited by a DOE
recognized accreditation body or five years of experience sports turf management or irrigation repair
and management preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of basic mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in a public building. Knowledge of
custodial materials and equipment. Skills in the operation of various cleaning equipment including pool
vacuums, floor scrubbers and wet vacuums, transfer pumps, lawn mowers and snow blower. Ability to
follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and understand work orders and maintains written
job records.
