HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWI - ForestryCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #04-15 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker I - Forestry Department: Parks and Recreation Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry Job Summary Under immediate direction, performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance and care of the urban forest in parks, along trails, in natural areas and other public facilities and grounds within the City. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Answers questions and provides information to the public. Assists with tree, shrub and perennial pruning, trimming, removing, chipping, planting, weeding and watering. Operates chainsaws, hand saws, hand pruners, pole pruners, trucks, chippers, aerial lifts, backhoes, loaders and other specialized equipment. Assists in snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm damage clean-up, and ice skating area maintenance. Performs minor mechanical repairs and small engine repairs. Maintains tools and equipment. Installs snow removal equipment on tractors and trucks. Assists other divisions, contractors and agencies as needed. Responds to storm or other emergencies, as needed. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties as assigned. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required work off-ladder and sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Three months of experience in tree maintenance, arboriculture and/or urban forestry required. Valid commercial driver’s license instruction permit required at time of hire. Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsements required within 90 days of hire. Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsements required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. Must obtain forklift and backhoe certification within 12 months of hire. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Two year degree in forestry, arboriculture and/or natural resource management from an educational institution accredited by a DOE recognized accreditation body preferred. Two years of experience in tree maintenance, arboricultural operations and/or urban forestry preferred. Pesticide applicator’s license preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Skills in the operation of chainsaws, hand saws, hand pruners, pole pruners, trucks, chippers, aerial lifts, backhoes, loaders and other specialized equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and understand work orders, arboricultural best management practices and maintain written and digital job records. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and take measurements. Ability to proficiently use computers, tablets and digital devices.
