HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - ForestryCITY OF IOWA CITY – Job Description Job Class #05-01 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker II - Forestry Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry Job Summary Under immediate direction, plants and maintains trees and landscape plantings located in City’s rights- of-way, parks and other public areas. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Plants, trims, removes and maintains trees located in City rights-of-way, parks and other public areas. Assists in the emergency removal and clean-up of storm damaged trees. Transplants trees and shrubs from City nursery to public areas. Plants bare root trees in City’s nursery and maintains trees by mechanical and other means. Assists in maintaining appropriate records of daily work logs, public requests for tree planting and removal, stump removal, and inventories of previously planted trees. Trains hourly workers, as assigned. Operates and performs minor repair and cleans equipment, including chainsaws, wood chipper, tree spade, bucket truck, rope and saddle, roto tiller and various hand tools. Assists in purchasing for daily operations. Removes snow located in City right-of-ways, parks and other public areas. Constructs safe work zones within the City right of ways. Operates trucks and heavy equipment. Trains hourly employees on work quality, output and safe working practices. Makes contact with the public to resolve complaints or issues and to share information. Works with other divisions, such as Parks and Central Business District crews as directed. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Two years of experience in urban forestry practices or in a related field required. Forklift and backhoe certification within probationary period. Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with airbrakes endorsement and satisfactory driving record required. Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrakes endorsement required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification One year or equivalent education in forestry, horticulture or related field from a DOE recognized accreditation body preferred. Three to four years’ experience in urban forestry practices preferred. GIS databasing and tree inventorying software experience preferred. ISA Certified Arborist or Certified Municipal Arborist preferred. ISA Certified Tree Worker Aerial Lift Specialist preferred. ISA Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist preferred. Pesticide applicator’s license preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of arboricultural techniques including heavy rigging for removal of trees and dead or hazardous limbs. Knowledge of tree maintenance and tree identification. Knowledge of tree diseases. Ability to read written instructions and maps, to prepare written log sheets and records. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to interact positively with co-workers and other City department staffs.
