Position Title: Maintenance Worker II – Horticulture

Job Summary
Under general direction, performs a variety of tasks in the grounds maintenance of the Central
Business District as well as areas in the City parks and City right-of-ways.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Works routinely on both manicured and natural areas during all seasons and weather conditions.
Performs landscape maintenance of plant materials in the Central Business District and adjacent
areas including planting, weeding, watering, mulching, raking, mowing, trimming and pruning.
Assists in the removal of snow and ice on snow route areas as assigned.
Performs minor to moderate mechanical repairs on equipment and performs routine maintenance on
tools and equipment.
Assists and performs landscape duties on flower beds, natural areas and specific locations in various
City parks and City right-of-ways as assigned.
Supervises and acts as a lead worker for a support staff of hourly employees engaged in routine
assignments.
Ensures that employees follow proper safety practices and have proper equipment in good working
order.
Operates pickup trucks, skid steer loader with various attachments, tractors, mowers, string trimmers,
snow blowers, roto-tillers and other specialized equipment.
Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace
and community.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands
to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and
hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, climb or balance, and taste and smell. The
employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25
pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather
conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious
places; and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or
caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
One year of responsible experience in landscape and grounds maintenance and facilities repair or an
equivalent combination of training and experience required. Forklift and backhoe certification within
probationary period. Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with airbrakes endorsement and
satisfactory driving record required. Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrakes
endorsement required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing
requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen
is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience and Certification
Two years of prior experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of general maintenance and repair of municipal grounds and facilities including custodial
materials and equipment, light construction, plumbing, electrical and carpentry techniques and
equipment. Knowledge of horticultural practices including the care and maintenance of annuals,
perennials, ground covers, trees and shrubs. Knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety
precautions. Skills in the operation and routine maintenance of various equipment including power
vacuums, sweepers, scrubbers, lawn mowers, snow blowers, roto-tillers, cord trimmers, and a variety
of power tools. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, to read and understand work orders and to
maintain written job records. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-
workers and the general public. Ability to responsibly perform assignments without immediate
supervision. Ability to perform as a lead worker and supervise, assign or delegate work to a support
staff of seasonal employees.
