HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - ParksCITY OF IOWA CITY - Job Description Job Class #05-02 FLSA Non-Exempt Civil Service Identification Position Title: Maintenance Worker II - Parks Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry Job Summary Under general direction, performs a variety of tasks in the repair and maintenance of parks and other public facilities. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Performs all duties in a safe manner and may participate on the safety committee. Interacts with the general public to answer questions and provide information. Mows and trims park grounds and highways. Prunes, trims and chips trees and shrubs. Lays sod. Maintains and repairs park areas and facilities including sports fields and ponds. Removes dead animals. Vacuums, mulches and bags leaves. Assists in work involving painting, carpentry, cement work, electrical, plumbing, hydraulic, building siding, roof shingles, welding, cutting torch, fabrication or other trade work. Operates trucks, rotary mowers and tractors. Occasionally operates backhoes, loaders and other specialized equipment. Assists in snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm damage clean-up and ice rink maintenance. Performs minor mechanical repairs. Performs small engine repair. Maintains tools, tractors, mowers, and equipment. Job Class #05-02 Parks & Forestry Page 2 Updated 4/13/21 Installs snow removal equipment on tractors. Directs the work activities of park volunteers, hourly workers and work crew, as assigned. Trains additional carnival crew workers as assigned. Performs landscaping including building retaining walls, seeding, dirt work, repairing drain tiles, building fences, and mulching. Maintains ice rink and warming house. Constructs, demolishes and repairs playgrounds and shelters. Maintains carnival equipment to include equipment repair, painting, rebuilding, as well as annual set up and tear down. Maintains water lines. Builds trailers, picnic tables and other park facilities; pours concrete. Builds trailways. Orders and picks up parts. Stocks hardware. Cleans work area and break room. Maintains City park shop and restrooms. Installs and maintains irrigation systems. Performs chemical applications. Maintains and distributes schedule of events. Assists Forestry, Streets Department, construction crews and Central Business District as needed. Responds to storm or other emergencies, as needed. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs all other related duties as assigned. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk and hear; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of radiation. May be exposed to communicable disease. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Minimum Education, Experience and Certification One year of experience in park maintenance operations required. Forklift and backhoe certification within probationary period. Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with airbrakes endorsement and satisfactory driving record required. Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrakes endorsement required within 6 months of hire. This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Must be 18 years of age per Iowa Code 92.8. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience and Certification Two years of experience in park maintenance preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry and general construction methods. Knowledge of custodial materials and equipment. Skills in the operation of various cleaning equipment including pool vacuums, floor scrubbers and wet vacuums, transfer pumps, lawn mowers, and snow blower. Ability to navigate a small boat for pond clean up. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and understand work orders, park rules, and maintain written job records. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and take measurements.
