PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that each indivi
possesses the power of self-fulfillment regardless of their circumstance and that it is the
duty of all human beings to strengthen communities, alleviate poverty, and harness the
potential of us all; and
Whereas, Dr. King's dream of transforming the world into one free from
discrimination and intolerance continues in the minds of millions and has not been
forgotten since his devastating death on April 4, 1968; and
Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life to promoting peace, freedom,
and opportunity through non-violent means; and
Whereas, the teachings of Dr. King can continue to guide and inspire us in addressing
challenges in our communities; and
Whereas, there are numerous ways to show service and respect to others, such as
volunteering at your local hospital, donating books and games to families in need,
organizing a food drive in your school, volunteering at a senior center, and many others;
and
Whereas, the City of Iowa City joins with other towns and cities across the country in
tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim Monday,
January 18, 2021 to be
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
in Iowa City, and urge all to join me in the celebration thereof, and to take this
opportunity to reflect upon Dr. King's message of the principles of justice and equality
for all.
