Decisions on how best distribute the limited supply of vaccines are being made at the State and County level of government. The City Council does not have standing to make decisions regarding distribution here in Iowa City. I do know the staff at the Johnson County Public Health Department are working tirelessly to ensure that the supply we do have is reaching the intended populations as quickly as possible. I encourage you to visit their website often for the latest updates. https:Hcoronavirus-johnsoncounty.hub.arcgis.com/ Best wishes, Geoff Fruin City Manager -----Original Message ----- From: Diana Russo <dianarussoic@gmail.com> Sent: Monday, January 18, 202111:28 AM To: Council <Council@iowa-city.org> Subject: Covid Vaccine Availability I am wondering if you have read the Press Citizen article last week that stated that vaccinations of others in Johnson County may be delayed "several months" because of the large health care population. While it is essential that medical staff working directly with CoVid patients be vaccinated first, what about those over 65 ---80 percent of deaths have been in people over 65. My husband, 71, has third -stage kidney disease and I (72)have Lupus. Why should we have to wait longer than the elderly in Cedar Rapids, for example, to be vaccinated? I hope the Council is willing to explore this issue and set some realistic guidelines for Iowa City --such as vaccinating the elderly before health care workers who have only marginal contact with Covid. Thank you. Diana Russo This email is from an external source. Item Number: 8.b. I know how much more difficult everything has been during the pandemic, and I would imagine that many of you are struggling just to find COVID-safe ways to go about your jobs, not to mention your daily lives. > This is such a small quibble I almost hate to bring it up, but I think of it every year, and for some reason this is the year I've decided to bring it up. Every year when I read the schedule of services and see that garbage collection will take place as usual, I remember how Dr. King was in Memphis to support striking sanitation workers when he was assassinated, and I wish we could do something to acknowledge the work of our sanitation workers on this day. I am not a sanitation worker, and I don't know if they would want a day off, or if that would just make their work harder the next day. But I know they do a difficult and often thankless job, and that they are part of Dr. King's story. > There are so many essential city workers, many of whom have jobs we do not see (the people who keep our water clean and safe) or don't appreciate fully (I always think of the road crews here), not to mention the people who pay bills and answer 911 calls and keep the buses running. > I know the Council too has a lot on its plate, from the serious to the spurious. But perhaps in the back of your mind when next winter rolls around again, you might consider a resolution honoring our sanitation workers in honor of Dr. King. > My thanks for all your work. > Sincerely, > Laura Crossett > 1420 Yewell St. > Iowa City, IA 52240 Item Number: 8.c. I am a resident of Iowa City and I want to, once again, express my concerns and opposition to the police reform plan brought forward by the City Manager. We do not need the police budget to increase and most of the proposals included in the plan would do so. We need to take that money away from the police department and invest in somewhere else entirely, and not feed an already bloated budget. Thank you for your time and attention, Elisa
