CITY OIF IOWA CITY www.icgov.org April 6, 2021 ATTACHMENTS: Description Arab American Heritage Month proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, for over a century, Arab Americans have been making valuable contributions to virtually every aspect of American society: in medicine, law, business, education, technology, government, military service, culture; and Whereas, since migrating to America, men and women of Arab descent have shared their rich culture and traditions with neighbors and friends, while also setting fine examples of model citizens and public servants; and Whereas, they brought with them to America their resilient family values, strong work ethic, dedication to education, and diversity in faith and creed that have added strength to our great democracy, and Whereas, Arab Americans have also enriched our society by sharing in the entrepreneurial American spirit that makes our nation free and prosperous; and Whereas, the history of Arab Americans in the US. remains neglected or defaced by misconceptions, bigotry, and anti -Arab hate in the forms of crimes and speech; and Whereas, Arab American issues, such as civil rights abuses, harmful stereotyping, and bullying must be combated in the forms of education and awareness; and Whereas, they join all Americans in the desire to see a peaceful and diverse society, where every individual is treated equally and feels safe; and Whereas, the incredible contributions and heritage of Arab Americans have helped us build a better nation. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, April 11, 2021, marks the 53rd anniversary of the passage of the F Housing Act, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, which enunciates a national policy of Fair Housing without regard to race, color, religion, sex, familial status, disability, and national origin, and encourages fair housing opportunities for all; and Whereas, the Iowa City Area Association of REALTORS® is committed to highlight the Fair Housing Act by continuing to address discrimination in our community, to support programs that will educate the public about the right to equal housing opportunities, and to plan partnership efforts with other organizations to help assure every one of their right to fair housing; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City adopted its Fair Housing Ordinance in August of 1964 and currently prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, familial status, presence or absence of dependents, disability, gender identity or public assistance source of income is prohibited; and Whereas, the National Association OF REALTORS® Code of Ethics commits all REALTORS® to providing equal professional services without discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and national origin. Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2021, to be Fair Housing Month which begins a year-long commemoration of the Fair Housing Act in Iowa City and urge all citizens to wholeheartedly recognize this celebration throughout the year. CITY OIF IOWA CITY www.icgov.org April 6, 2021 ATTACHMENTS: Description National Community Development Week proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership (HOME) programs support viable communities by providing safe, decent, affordable housing, creating safer neighborhoods, helping seniors live independently and investing in our next generation; and Whereas, in our community, forty-six years of CDBG funding has developed a strong network of relationships among local governments, residents, businesses, and non-profit organizations that provide services and help make possible our commitment to meet the needs of low- and moderate -income residents; and Whereas, the HOME Program has allowed the City, with the help of private and non- profit partners, to create and preserve affordable housing for low-income families for the past twenty-nine years; and Whereas, CDBG and HOME are some of the Federal Government's most effective means to revitalize communities across the country. The importance of CDBG and HOME to meet the unique needs of local communities is widely recognized; and Whereas, in the last five years, over $3 million in CDBG funds and over $2 million in HOME funds have been invested in Iowa City. These funds help low income homeowners complete necessary improvements to their property, provide low-interest loans for entrepreneurs, allow for accessibility improvements in local parks, increase the quality and availability of affordable housing throughout the community, and support agencies serving our at risk youth, elderly, and residents with disabilities; and Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa and other local governments have clearly demonstrated the capacity to administer and customize the CDBG and HOME programs to identify, prioritize and resolve pressing local problems, such as affordable housing, neighborhood and buman service needs, job creation and retention, and property redevelopment. CITY OIF IOWA CITY www.icgov.org April 6, 2021 ATTACHMENTS: Description National Service Recognition Day proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and central to how we meet our challenges; and Whereas, AmeriCorps participants address the most pressing challenges facing our cities and communities, from supporting veterans, youth, and other underserved populations by promoting and mentoring healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, national service expands economic opportunity by creating more sustainable, resilient communities and providing education, careers skills, and leadership abilities for those who serve as well as the community members they are serving; and Whereas, AmeriCorps participants serve in more than 60,000 locations across the country including organizations in Iowa City, helping to bolster the civic, neighborhood, and faith -based organizations that are so vital to our economic and social well-being; and Whereas, national service participants increase the impact of the organizations they serve with, both through their direct service and through management of millions of additional volunteers; and Whereas, national service participants demonstrate commitment, dedication, and patriotism by making an intensive commitment, a commitment that remains with them in their future endeavors; and Whereas, the Corporation for National and Community Service shares a priority with mayors nationwide to engage citizens, improve lives, and strengthen communities; and is joining with the National League of Cities, City of Service, and mayors across the country to recognize the impact of service on the Day of Recognition for National Service on April 6th, 2021. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, 4Cs of Johnson County, along with the Iowa Association for Education of Young Children and other local organizations, in conjunction with the National Association forthe Education ofYoung Children, are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Week of the Young Child (WOYC) April 16, 2021; and 10 - Whereas, by highlighting the need for high-quality early care and education for all children and families, within our communities and the state, these groups are committed to the early care and education system in Iowa that will ensure every child, beginning at birth, is healthy and successful; and Whereas, the latest research on brain development and how children learn, and what we know about the return on investments in young children, we fully support the need for access to high quality early care and educational services; and Whereas, the future of our communities and the economy of our state depends on the quality of the early care and education experiences, as well as access to the high quality early care and education programs, provided to young children today; and Whereas, we must recognize the vital work performed by early care and education professionals, express our gratitude for their important services and support efforts to see that they are fairly compensated.
