Arbor Day proclamation
Item Number: 3.a.
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the coming of Spring produces a renewal of interest in tree planting for
beauty, shade, conservation, and many other purposes beneficial to all people; and
Whereas, the observation of Arbor Day has long been characterized by the planting
and preservation of trees; and
Whereas, trees in Iowa City beautify our community, increase property values, reduce
pollution, lower energy costs, and enhance the economic vitality of business areas; and
Whereas, because trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, having a diverse
and healthy tree population constitutes a major part of Iowa City's effort to mitigate
against climate change; and
Whereas, trees can provide natural air conditioning; the evaporation from a single
tree can produce the cooling effect of 10 room size air conditioners operating 20 hours
a day; and
Whereas, evergreen trees can be used to reduce wind speed and thus loss of heat
from our homes in the winter by as much as 10 to 50 percent.
Now, therefore, 1, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim
April 30, 2021, to be
Arbor Day
in Iowa City, and I hereby urge all citizens to participate in tree planting and preservation
projects throughout the year.

PROCLAMATION
Whereas, fifty years ago on April 28, 1971 the Occupational Safety and Health Act
went into effect promising every worker the right to a safe job; and
Whereas, OSHA has saved the lives of an estimated 618,000 workers since its
passage, yet in spite of the progress thousands of workers are killed on the job each
year and millions more suffer illness or injury because of dangerous working
conditions; and
Whereas, in the past year the COVID-19 virus has killed more than 500,000 people
in this country so far, devastating working families, with a disproportionate impact on
people of color; and
Whereas, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the lack of resources, enforcement
actions, and accountability for agencies tasked with protecting workers' safety and
their ability to speak out about unsafe conditions without fear of retaliation; and
Whereas, April 280' is observed as Workers' Memorial Day in nearly 100 countries,
as a day to remember and honor those who have suffered and died on the job, and to
rededicate ourselves to the fight for safe workplaces; and
Whereas, in this historic moment we must strengthen workplace safety agencies and
protect workers' rights to organize and advocate for their safety, in order to renew our
promise to working people; and
Whereas, the Iowa City Federation of Labor will hold a remembrance ceremony on
April 28 to honor those who have died on the job in Iowa in the previous year, and
renew our commitment to safe jobs.
Now, therefore, do we, the Mayor and City Council of Iowa City, proclaim
