Jewish American Heritage month proclamation
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, Jewish American Heritage Month had its origins in 1980 when
authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation designating a week in
April or May as Jewish Heritage Week; and
Whereas, President Carter issued the first proclamation in April 1980 which spoke
about the bountiful contributions made by the Jewish people to the culture and history of
the United States; and
Whereas, on April 20, 2006, President George W. Bush proclaimed that May would be
Jewish American Heritage Month formalizing the crowning achievement of the more than
350 -year history of Jewish contributions to American culture; and
Whereas, the Jewish American story is an essential chapter of the American narrative.
It is one of refuge from persecution; of commitment to service, faith, democracy, and
peace; and of tireless work to achieve success. As leaders in every facet of American life
-- from athletics, entertainment, and the arts to academia, business, government, and our
Armed Forces -- Jewish Americans have shaped our Nation and helped steer the course of
our history. We are a stronger and more hopeful community because so many Jews from
around the world have made Iowa City their home.
Now, therefore, 1, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim May 2021
to be
Jewish American Heritage Month
in Iowa City and encourage all residents to join in this observance.

National Gun Violence Awareness Day proclamation
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, every day, more than 100 Americans are killed by gun violence, alongside more than
230 who are shot and wounded, and on average there are more than 13,000 -gun homicides every
year; and
Whereas, Iowa has an average of 281 -gun deaths every year, with a rate of 8.7 deaths per
100,000 people and has the 43rd highest rate of gun deaths in the US; and
Whereas, support for the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens goes hand-in-hand
with keeping guns away from people with dangerous histories;
Whereas, gun violence prevention is more important than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic
continues to exacerbate gun violence after more than a year of increased gun sales, increased
calls to suicide and domestic violence hotlines, and an increase in city gun violence; and
Whereas, people across the United States will recognize National Gun Violence Awareness
Day and wear orange in tribute to Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager who was tragically shot and
killed at age 15 in January 2013, to recognize her 20 birthday and the loved ones of those
victims of violence; and
Whereas, the idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya's friends, who asked their classmates to
commemorate her life by wearing orange; they chose this color because hunters wear orange to
announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods, and orange is a color that
symbolizes the value of human life; and
Whereas, anyone can join this campaign by pledging to Wear Orange on June 0, the first
Friday in June in 2021, to help raise awareness about gun violence; and
Whereas, we renew our commitment to reduce gun violence and pledge to do all we can to
keep firearms out of the wrong hands and encourage responsible gun ownership to help keep our
children safe.
Now, therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the first Friday in
June, June 4, 2021 to be
National Gun Violence Awareness Day
and encourage all citizens to support their communities' efforts to prevent the tragic effects of
gun violence and to honor and value human lives.
