While some materials need to be landfilled, many materials can be recycled, composted, or reused. Organics (Yard, Garden, Food, and Wood Waste) • Accepted at Compost Facility o Organics can be composted for $24/ton at Iowa City Landfill's Compost Facility (3900 Hebl Ave. SW, Iowa City) o Yard, garden and wood waste o Food waste o Untreated lumber/dimensional lumber (including pallets) • Not Accepted at Compost Facility o Treated lumber (including OSB and particle board) o Root balls must be separated out from logs and will be landfilled o Logs: Call the Iowa City Landfill for options (319-887-6160) Asphalt Shingles Clean loads can be recycled for $30/ton at Iowa City Landfill (3900 Hebl Ave. SW, Iowa City; 319-356- 5185). Shingles must be pre-separated from other materials. Usable Materials (Lumber, Carpeting, Doors) If you still have usable construction materials in good condition, donate to the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore (2401 Scott Blvd. SE, Iowa City, 319-338-5687) or contact Iowa Waste Exchange (319- 365-9941 ext. 121). See www.iowacityrestore.com for a full list of accepted materials. Why is this important? Over 3,000 tons of construction and demolition materials end up in the Iowa City Landfill every year. By recycling, composting, and reusing materials as much as possible, we can preserve landfill space and save natural resources. Historic, Usable Materials (> 50 Years Old) • Historically-significant usable materials in good condition can be donated to Salvage Barn (2401 Scott Blvd. SE, Iowa City, 319-351-1875). For a full list of accepted materials, visit www.salvagebarn.org. • Bricks: contact Gavin Historical Bricks (888-834-0172) Recycling Materials • Corrugated cardboard must be recycled in Johnson County. Drop-off recycling locations include East Side Recycling Center, North Dodge Recycling Center, and Iowa City Landfill (list of accepted materials at www.icgov.org/recycle). • Scrap metal can be recycled at the Iowa City Landfill at no cost, or at Petersen Iron and Metal (319-351-1331), or Muscatine Metals (319-338-1450). Other Materials • Appliances and Electronics: recycle at the Iowa City Landfill (www.icgov.org/ewaste) • Asbestos: dispose of at Iowa City Landfill; friable - $105/cubic yard; non-friable - $105/ton (Note: 24-hour notice is required. Call 319-356-5151.) • Ashes: special disposal fee may apply at Iowa City Landfill • Concrete: contact Rock Hard Concrete Recycling (319-631-3903), S and G Materials (319-354- 1667), River Products Company (319-338-1184), or Boomerang Corp.
