City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking affects women, children and men of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds, causing long-term physical, psychological and emotional harm; and Whereas, one in three Americans have witnessed an incident of domestic violence; and Whereas, children who experience domestic violence are at a higher risk for failure in school, mental illness, substance abuse, suicide, and may choose violence as a way to solve problems later in life; and Whereas, domestic violence in rural communities exists as a hidden, silent and often unrecognized crime that is often underreported; and Whereas, through the inspiration, courage and persistence of victims of domestic violence, their children and advocates, our communities are learning to recognize the impact of violence in the home and intimate relationships; and Whereas, the Domestic Violence Intervention Program has worked to end violence in intimate relationships for more than 40 years through the collaborative partnerships of advocates, volunteers, local municipalities, criminal justice, health and human services, faith communities, business leaders and private citizens; and Whereas, our community's achievements should be commended and we must continue our commitment to respect and support victims of domestic violence and to prevent future violence in our community. Now, Therefore, 1, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2021 to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Iowa City, Iowa, and urge all citizens to work together to eliminate domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking from our community. For over 40 years, we have offered support, resources, and safety to individuals in our eight -county service region. WHAT WE DO The services we provide include: • 24/7/365 emergency shelter in Johnson County • 24/7/365 emergency hotline • Safety planning • Mobile advocacy • Trauma -informed 1:1 counseling • Youth services • Emergency pet sheltering • And more INDIVIDUALS SERVED BY COUNTY • Cedar - 85 • Des Moines -252 • Henry - 61 • Iowa - 47 • Johnson -1,519 • Lee -172 • Van Buren - 5 • Washington - 45 SERVICES AT A GLANCE • Civil legal advocacy:116 • Criminal justice support 516 • Individual counseling: 1672 • Volunteer hours: 1,628 In FY21, DVIP provided 17,244 nights of safety 96% of clients reported feeling safer after working with DVIP In FY21, DVIP served 2,189 individuals SAFE PET PROGRAM DVIP offers emergency shelter, vet care, and foster care for the pets of victim/survivors. We serve 20 pets per year in Cooper's House, the kennel space in our shelter. Our staff attends city council meetings and board of supervisor meetings to thank those who support our work in the communities we serve. WEAR PURPLE DAY: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21ST Join us on Thursday, 10/22 in wearing PURPLE to support Victims/Survivors. Purple is the national color used to represent those most vulnerable in our communities. Be sure to share your photos with us on social media! 8 REASONS TO SUPPORT SURVIVORS On October 8th, we'll be going live on Facebook every hour for 8 hours. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the city of Iowa City is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting Iowa City; and Whereas, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and Whereas, home fires killed 2,980 people in the United States in 2019, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and fire departments in the United States responded to 481,500 home fires; and Whereas, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half and three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms; and Whereas, half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep; and Whereas, Iowa City first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and Whereas, Iowa City residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes; and Whereas, the 2021 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety" effectively reminds us to look for places fire could start, listen for the sound of the smoke alarm, and learn two ways out of every room.
