This show broadens the definition of spoken word by adding music to the powerful words brought to the stage. It speaks to anyone who appreciates poetry, music, and performance. Hosted by dynamic MC Caleb "The Negro Artist" Rainey, the lineup includes Larry Moore, Heather 'Byrd' Roberts, Laura Johnson, Jocelyn Rifas, David Duer, Ever Taylor, and Kelsey Bigelow. This show is presented both live and virtually in partnership with Iowa City Poetry and a part of the Mic Check Poetry Fest. Admission is $15 for adults age 19+ and free for teens age 13-18; or purchase a fest pass to get prepaid admission to all Mic Check Poetry Fest events. SoundReach Choir Concert Wednesday, November 17, 6:30 p.m. Location: Senior Center (1st Floor Lobby) SoundReach Choir is a performance group for teens and adults who have developmental disabilities, offering a structured music performance group experience to those who may not have other such opportunities. Transgender Day of Remembrance Film Screening: Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen Friday, November 19, 1:00 p.m. Location: Senior Center (Room 302) Register online or call 319-356-5220 This 2020 documentary is an unprecedented, eye- opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender. Reframing familiar scenes and iconic characters in a new light, director Sam Feder invites viewers to confront unexamined assumptions, and shows how what once captured the American imagination now elicit new feelings. Reading Spanish Texts in Spanish Tuesdays, November 2 - December 28, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Location: Senior Center (Room 305) Register online or call 319-356-5220 Facilitator: William Heald This group reads and translates intermediate level Spanish texts that will then be discussed by the group. The club meets for one hour. We will read some famous Spanish authors and other works of interest to the group. This is not a Spanish conversation group. Device Advice Tuesdays, November 2 - December 7, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Location: Senior Center (Room 302) Register online or call 319-356-5220 Device Advice is a student volunteer group from the University of Iowa that works to help shrink the digital divide between generations! Volunteers will be at The Center each week to offer guidance on all things technology, so bring your smartphones, tablets, laptops, or other devices, and your questions. Braille and Self Advocacy Mondays, 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Location: Senior Center (Room 305) Register: Email marcella.edmonds@blind.state.ia.us Instructor: Terri Wilcox Students will spend 1.5 hours learning the Braille code. This will involve learning the dot combinations and how to write them. After these are mastered, students learn to read Braille and improve reading speed. The last hour of class is devoted to learning to adjust attitudes toward blindness. Students learn through articles/discussion that they can live the lives they want. Even if you don't want to perform in public, take part in the practice experience for laughs, friends, and a head-to-toe workout! SHIIP, the Senior Health Insurance Information Program, is a service of the State of Iowa. The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program is a community-based group program that uses a variety of water exercises to increase physical activity among adults with arthritis. Classes include movements designed to increase range of motion and muscle strength while reducing fatigue and stiffness. Classes build in intensity from gentle to moderate to increase function and confidence in participants’ state of wellbeing. Participants do not need to know how to swim to participate. RecAssist is a program that helps support Iowa City residents by subsidizing recreational programs and opportunities. All information is confidential and is not a matter of public record. RecAssist reduces fees for eligible participants by 50% for most recreational programs, swim punch cards and passes, and offers 100% subsidy for swim lessons. People have always been intricately tethered to the food that they eat. Increasingly, we are learning that what we eat affects our bodies, in both positive and negative ways, and is linked with our health, culture, identity, and even our genes. Currently we are zooming only, but we have been in existence since 2005 with a changing cast and with in-person meetings at The Center. No entry requirements; it helps to love poetry and enjoy reading poems aloud and hearing others read. The Center is located at 28 S Linn St in Iowa City and is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The reception desk is located on the ground floor inside the Washington Street entrance. This is now the main public entrance to the Senior Center. The Skywalk entrance at level 3A of the Tower Place parking ramp remains open to the public. The Linn Street door is no longer a public entrance. We renamed our floors! While the ground and 1st floors remain the same, the mezzanine is now the 2nd floor, and the top floor is now the 3rd floor. Visitors to the Senior Center are required to wear a face covering that covers the nose and mouth at all times while in the building. Masks and hand sanitizer are available at each entrance. The Senior Center cannot require proof of vaccination as a condition of entry/participation. Please continue taking personal precautions. Many people prefer to maintain physical distance from others while visiting The Center. Please res- pect individual boundaries of other participants. Clean fitness equipment after use with provided sanitizing wipes. Stay home if you are sick or do not feel well. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of your elbow; throw away used tissues.
