Mindfulness Meditation 101: Changing Your
Relationship to Stress
Tuesdays, January 11 - March 8, 9:00-11:00 am
Location: Meets on Zoom
Register online or call 319-356-5220
Instructor: Christine Allen
Practicing mindfulness meditation, which involves
paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, body
sensations, and environment, has been shown to
improve overall well-being. Mindfulness is being aware
of what is happening as it’s happening in an open,
non-judgmental, accepting, and compassionate way.
This awareness helps develop habits of responding
wisely and skillfully as we negotiate life stressors.
This class will promote the development of a personal
practice of mindfulness meditation. Participants will
learn formal mindfulness meditation practices
including the body scan, mindful movement, sitting
and walking meditation, and compassion practices.
Informal mindfulness activities will invite participants
to adapt daily activities such as driving, eating,
communication, etc. into mindful activities.
This class encourages people to utilize
internal resources to cultivate health,
happiness, and manage stress more
effectively in all kinds of circumstances.
Participants will be encouraged to make a
commitment to engage in mindfulness activities for 20
to 30 minutes a day outside of class time. Audio links
and class readings will be provided. This class is
recommended for anyone who would like to respond
with more skill, ease, and creativity to the stress in
their lives.
Fee: $90; pay Senior Center at registration. This course
is taught by Christine Allen as a fundraiser for the
Senior Center; the class fee is waived for participants
in the Senior Center’s low-income membership
program.
Christine Allen has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress
Reduction at UIHC since 2004 after receiving training
from Jon Kabat-Zinn and staff at the Center for
Mindfulness. She has taught classes in a variety of
settings including undergraduate classes at the University
of Iowa, a graduate class for educators at Grant Wood
AEA, and teaching parents in school settings.

Location: Meets on Zoom
Register online or call 319-356-5220

Sherman. His book is an historical fiction account set
in the 1880s in Iowa City when a very bloody conflict
developed between the prohibitionists and the three
most powerful brewers in Iowa City—known as “the
Beer Mafia.” These three well-known brewers were
capitalizing from a growing population and an influx of
immigrants from Germany, the Czech Republic, and
Ireland, who loved their beer. Come along and hear
how the clash of all these events in the Northside of
town shaped America for a generation. This program
is offered in partnership with TRAIL of Johnson County.

Is there really conflict between creation and evolution
in the Bible? Is humankind doomed from the
beginning because of original sin proclaimed by
theologians from the Book of Genesis onward?
Was Jesus really born without male participation
(Virgin Birth) as the Church professes in all its Creeds?
Did Mary really carry God in her womb (Incarnation);
that is, was Jesus God or became later part of the
Godhead? Is Jesus’ resurrection from the dead the
most solid fact in all history? And when and how will
human history end, and can we use the Bible

Mondays, January 24 - February 28, 3:00-4:15 pm
Location: Meets on Zoom
Register online or call 319-356-5220
Facilitator: Emily Edrington
Architecture structures our daily lives. It shapes our
homes, streets, neighborhoods, cities and more. But
who gets to create and occupy these spaces? In the
United States, a long history of anti-Black racism has
created spatial inequalities that are built into the
physical environment and erased the stories of Black
architects and communities. Reimagining Blackness and
Architecture, a massive open online course (MOOC)
created by the Museum of Modern Art and presented
via Coursera.org, explores the relationship between
architecture and Blackness as an identity and a lived
experience. Join to absorb and discuss course materials
together. A (free) Coursera.org account will be needed.

plant families of North America. You will also discover a
few families that are mainly tropical but very important
to human uses. Each week we'll watch two 30-minute

If Barns Could Talk
Friday, February 25, 1:00-2:00 pm
Location: Meets on Zoom
Register online or call 319-356-5220
Presenter: Rich Tyler
Old barns are more than just solid,
functional buildings. They represent the
soul of our farming heritage and perhaps more!
What is a barn, architecturally and emotionally?
Barn design was based on experience, needs, and
ambition. Their function indicated both the farm
operation and the farmer’s personal touch. Barn
construction was a community affair comprised of
hard work, huge meals, and a barn dance. Few of us
today have the products of our labor on display for all
to see, appreciate, and criticize. But what’s happening
to our old barns and why should we care about old
barns today? These and other questions will be
discussed as the history and current importance of
barns are explored. This program is offered in
partnership with
Humanities Iowa
and TRAIL of
Johnson County.
