WELCOME FROM THE SENOIR CENTER COORDINATOR:
DeLoach welcomed the Commissioners and let them know she is available to
meet with any of them if they would ever like to meet one on one.
OPERATIONAL OVERVIEW:
DeLoach reported the May and June program calendar is available now. There
will still be some online programs, however many are now in person in the
building or at offsite locations. She noted more people are coming into the
building.
DeLoach reported the Senior Center has started working with a marketing firm,
Easton Designs. The Senior Center has a contract for a year with them. The goal

of working with them is to fine tune the Senior Center’s branding and logo. The
Senior Center changed its logo about 10 years ago. At the time the trend was to
move away from the word “senior” which was why the current logo does not
feature it prominently. This will be something staff discuss. DeLoach stated she
will bring ideas to the commission as the process progresses.
The Senior Center master plan report was presented to the City Council at their
work session on Tuesday. OPN did a similar presentation to what was presented
to the commission in January. DeLoach noted there is currently about 6.2 million
dollars in CIP funds for renovations. Three million will go to the exterior work that
is necessary. The kitchen renovation will cost about 1 million. The most extensive
interior building renovations would need an additional 6-8 million. The interior
plan could be scaled back. The exterior work will move forward in the next year
or so because it is of a more time sensitive nature. Given amount of money
needed to renovate and that even renovations may not solve all of the location
challenges this building presents staff will take the next 6 -12 months to
investigate all possibilities including staying in this location with varying degrees
of renovations, renovating an existing location, or building a new facility.
DeLoach anticipates working with public policy to create community surveys to
gather options from the public.
Vogel asked if there would be any possibility of the new building across the street
to provide parking for the Senior Center. Beckman asked if a tax incentive could
be explored to incentivize the potential for Senior Center parking to be included
in their plans.
COMMISSION DISCUSSION:
Korty noted the article in the packet was one he wrote a number of years ago. It
highlighted how single seniors are at the highest risk of poverty. He provided a
handout to the group with a list of resources. He wondered if these types of
resources could be included on the Senior Center website. McConville noted
there are some dedicated resources in Johnson County including an online
resource directory managed by the county. DeLoach noted Senior Center staff
often get calls and emails from members of the public regarding referrals. Often
people are referred to Jeff Kellbach, Johnson County’s Aging Specialist. Korty
asked how the Senior Center could get specific information, for example, about
reverse mortgages. DeLoach said where the Senior Center could come in would
be to do a program about a specific topic like this. Additionally, depending on the
information or topic information could be included in the weekly newsletter or in a
physical space, like the pantry area for additional resources related to food
insecurity. McConville asked if commissioners would like to have a presentation
from Jeff Kellbach at an upcoming meeting. Commissioners thought that would
be a good idea.

McConville asked how plans for a proposed member event was coming along.
DeLoach reported a member and volunteer event will be held on June 14 th from
4-6 PM at Terry True Blood. Food trucks will be available as well as time to
socialize and enjoy the park.
The Senior Center will have a table at the Public Works open house on May 21st.
McConville reported she will be gone for the next regularly scheduled meeting
and wondered if others would be available the week before or after. Staff will
follow up.
DeLoach reported Susan Carroll resigned from the Commission.
Meeting adjourned at 5:03 PM.
