TheIowa City Fire Department has a rich history of providing outstanding emergency response to fire and other emergencies for 150 years! During that time, our organization has grownfrom a single firehouse that was home to our last fire horses, Snowball and Highball, to a multi-station all hazards fire department with a deep sense of community service. The Iowa City Fire Department has much to offer our members in a wide range of servicesthat we provide to our community. Fire prevention and community risk reduction is key to our success as an organization, and we remain very active in community programs andpartnerships with the University of Iowa. In keeping with national trends, the Iowa City Fire Department is very active and progressive in our approach to emergency medical servicesthat we provide to our community. As a non-transport emergency medical provider, the Iowa City Fire Department co-dispatched with Johnson County Ambulance. Our special operations team is well equipped and highly trained to respond to hazardous materials incidents, high anglerescue, confined space rescue, and water related emergencies. Our members enjoy state of the art equipment and a training facility that has a training tower to simulate highrise operations and another live fire training facility to replicate residentialfires. Numerous other training props ensure that our members are ready to respond to all types of emergency situations- fire, medical, and special operations. Members of the Iowa City Fire Department have the opportunity for special assignments such as fire investigation, shiftfire inspector, and community education. The Iowa City Fire Department also enjoys a close relationship with the University of Iowa and is an active participant in home football games with members providing medical care and firesuppression at Kinnick Stadium. Working and living in the Iowa City area provides big city amenities in a smaller community. Cultural events abound and diversity is a cornerstone of the Iowa City community. Exceptional public schools, parks, and medical care help to makeIowa City a fantastic place for families and all people who call Iowa City home. We are in search of individuals who are passionate about providing service to the community. Our department members come from a diverse work background (factory worker, college student, retail, general business, attorney, scientist, sportsofficial, musician) before becoming firefighters.
