1 I do not s ee a designat ed area f or a computer lab for group computer classes. I believe thes e
ty pes of clas s es are essential for seniors to k eep them c onnected in our rapidly changing
world.

2 lev el 2 lounge. workstations look like, though s eparated in spac e from lounge, will c ause nois e
iss ues from all the key board clacking. Also, bad feng sui hav ing someone able t o look over
your s houlder while using pc . annoying to many. Lev el 3-s ame comment on to many small
one-on-one meetings. 2, 3 t ops. s ince mos t actic ities are Group, t hese smaller ones will not be
as used (IMO), so space will go underutiliz ed.

13 Lik e the fac t that similar ac tivities are grouped by floor; the plan is fine overall. It seems
ineff icient to have s ome of the staff loc ated on diff erent floors, es pec ially those who might
need to work together more closely, but I am assuming that s taff members hav e weighed in on

21 I see no reas on to change t he entranc e. There are numerous ways for handicapped t o enter.
No need for the ex pense when t he Center is work ing well. Als o, it is nic e to meet people doing
different things at the Center. People who are doing fit ness enjoy meeting and talking to people
tak ing clas s es, and other things. No reason to isolate activ ities to a single floor. Also, s eniors
are comf ortable in a historic environment. We don't want s mall rooms with lots of glas s and
div iders.

22 1. Need more c omment space on this surv ey. 2. I doubt that v ery many people are really going
to study the drawings in detail. 3. KEEP the front Entrance as-is on Linn St. There is PLENTY
to spac e to add a ramp between the t wo ent ranc es. Otherwise this remodeling is a waste of
time and money. 4. Regardless, need bicycle park ing at t he Was hington Street Entrance. 5.
There is NO c ar parking on Washington Street . Why not just allow the Seats bus and tax is
good access in the alley at the ramp. 6. Was hington st is farther from the city bus st ops. 7.

Where are the doors. 9. GIven the budget t he SC is NOT going to st aff 2 reception areas . 10.
You asked us to rate the Conference Area. Where is it in the ex ist ing plan? 11. I think all of
this is a waste of time and money. Just put a ramp on the Linn Street entrance and a bicy c le
rac k at the Linn Street entranc e. 9.

27 I really think mos t of us enjoy the center the way it is . I did not hav e a clear choice as to
which alt ernate is bes t. I only said alt ernate one becaus e the program required me t o c hoose
one of the alt ernatives. I am not really in favor of any of t he major ov erhauls!!

28 Too muc h detail has been pres ented to really make a judgement. I really like shifting the main
entranc e to the north s ide, it's c raz y t o hav e handic apped park ing spaces in front of the stairs
on the wes t. The only problem will c ome when the elev ator doesn't work as happens

heat or c ool suc h a large space. It would also giv e much more spac e to utilize for c lass rooms,
offic e s pace, storage s pace, or anything els e that is needed. The library shelv es under the
windows could be too low, espec ially for elderly who have heart, bac k, knee, or other healt h
iss ues that prev ent them from bending eas ily. The tall s helves would need stools to ac c ess
which are dangerous f or t hose with balance iss ues as well as knee problems . You certainly
can't access tall shelves from a wheelc hair, or if you are s hort! Big ADA is s ues.

dances . I see that that it will be partitioned but I hope that we mmmmight be able to us e one of

49 Being able to park in t he ramp and cros s the walkway into t he building without hav ing to cross
slippery s idewalks in the winter is very important. The ac c ess to art and education is a big
draw for me so your c lassrooms and art areas are essential. The idea that you will update and
open the kitc hen to clas s es is thrilling to me. Pleas e cons ider mak ing the k itc hen a priority.
Being able to s hare food and learning to eat well/healthy is s o important thes e day s . The
vis iting nurs e/healthcare is important and it mak es s ens e for it to be down in the wellness area
where they c an be close to help s omeone if they have problems when using the fitness
equipment.

2 It would be nice to combine the Cardio & Fit ness rooms along the West s ide of t he Ground
floor by expanding into the former Art Room and, as equipment is added, into the former billiard
room. Many us e headphones/earbuds while exercis ing, but the loud mus ic from aerobic
clas s es blasts right through the HVAC vent into the Cardio room. As thes e are probably the
bigges t users of the s howers & loc k ers, ac cess could remain t hrough the current Weight room.
It would be really nic e to have a c hanging room to go from street clothes to fitnes s c lot hes,
especially in winter.

3 All plans : - I f the c omputers are moved to Lev el 2, will access hours be reduc ed? - Level 3, the
NE classroom by t he ramp entranc e: If this room is partit ioned, how does one enter the
partitioned area without disrupting the other half of the room? - People chat ting as they walk
down t he 3rd floor hallway has overwhelmed all of the classrooms . I cannot imagine public

4 I did watc h the the three propos als video, but I don't feel qualified to really pick one design
over another. I think the highest priorities s hould be giv en to long term ef ficienc y in
design/energy use. I am not sure how muc h us e the one-on-one meeting rooms on the 3rd floor
would be us ed as well as they would need to be highly sound proof t o be us eful as y ou cannot
expect people walking in the hallway not to talk , laugh, and somet imes call out to others while
right nex t to them.

11 A more prominent exterior entry /portico/vestibule may be be us eful for the new South Main
Entry as would free up the present interior glass vestibule to make a more spacious int erior
rec eption and waiting area. Since the new ground main f loor is very tight a more open spac e
would give relief. Als o importing natural light here would help, possibly with a more atrium
outs ide entry (plants/greenhous e...pas siv e solar)?

and comments along the way. After s tudy ing the plans again, I will have more comments .
Where can I s end them without bothering to go through the long series of questions ? Here is
what I ent ered onc e given a c hance to comment: 1. Need more comment space on this
surv ey. 2. I doubt that v ery many people are really going to st udy the drawings in detail. 3.
KEEP the front Entrance as-is on Linn St. There is PLENTY to s pace to add a ramp between
the two entranc es. Otherwise this remodeling is a waste of time and money. 4. Regardless,
need bic y c le parking at the Washington Street Entranc e. 5. There is NO car parking on
Washington Street. Why not jus t allow the Seats bus and taxis good ac cess in the alley at the
ramp. 6. Washington s t is farther from the c ity bus s tops . 7. Most people use the parking
ramp. 8. In Alt #3, can the two f itness studios bec ome one? Where are the doors . 9. GIven the
budget the SC is NOT going to s taff 2 rec eption areas. 10. You asked us to rate t he
Conference Area. Where is it in the ex ist ing plan? 11. I think all of this is a waste of time and

23 I only picked plan 2 bc it was forc ed, don’t really hav e a preferenc e. I really only us e one
space (Assembly Room) and the c hanges (part itions ) are s imilar across all three plans . Didn’t
reply to sev eral questions for the s ame reason. The Cent er is a wonderful wonderful

26 The Iowa City Senior Center is a gem. •The building is a historic structure with wonderf ul
windows and priceless woodwork. •The main floor lounge is really grand. •The wes t side
vest ibules are a joy to behold—and us e. •The staircase with its iron work and wood handrails
is really (somet hing has t o be done about the peeling walls). I hope that if t he c it y mov es
forward with renovating the Senior Center, that it "does it right." It will not be a cheap endeavor.
Regarding the main floor lounge, and any of the lounges for that mat ter, what will be done to
dis c ourage v agrants from s etting up camp? As far as I know, areas now where staff are vis ible
do not have t his problem. I rec ogniz e that this a diffic ult problem and do not hav e a solution.
