Dubuque St for a fire alarm. At approximately 0123 hours the defendant called 911 and reported smoke inside her apartment. The def. was unable to tell 911 her address, stating she was watching an apartment, and refused to provide more information before hanging up on dispatch. Firefighters entered the building and located smoke coming from apartment #236. Firefighters made entry to apartment #236, which was locked via a deadbolt. Firefighters discovered the door had been barricade shut from the inside with a chair and table. Firefighters discovered the couch in the living room had been lit on fire. A Bic lighter and can of lighter fluid was located on the floor by the couch. Firefighters extinguished the fire and searched the residence, locating the defendant inside. No other person was present inside the apartment. A search warrant was executed at the apartment where it was discovered besides the couch being lit on fire, the tenant's glasses and headphones had been intentionally burned, and food was thrown all over the floors and walls of the apartment. I spoke with the tenant who stated he is the only occupant of the apartment, and he is currently out of state, The tenant stated the def. is his ex -girlfriend and had a key to his apartment. The tenant said the lighter and lighter fluid found on the living room floor near his burned up couch is not kept in that room. The tenant said both items are kept in his bedroom, and the defendant would have had to taken them to the living room. The tenant reported the defendant had contacted him several hours prior to the fire making suicidal comments, and was upset he would not immediately drive back Iowa City from out of state.. All evidence in this investigation supports the defendant used lighter fluid to intentionally light the tenants couch on fire. Evidence also supports the defendant lit two separate jar candles inside the apartment, placing the tenant's headphones in one and his eyeglasses in the other, Both items caught fire and sustained damage. 229 S, Dubuque Street is a large 5 story building with the first floor being commercial space, and the top 4 floors containing 48 individual apartments. During the time of this fire multiple residents were home and inside the building.
