HomeMy WebLinkAboutAssistant Superintendent - EquipmentUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Assistant Superintendent – Equipment Department: Public Works Division: Equipment Supervisor: Equipment Superintendent FLSA: Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 27 Job Number: 2716 Job Summary Under the general direc�on of the Equipment Superintendent, supervises the daily opera�on of the Equipment shop(s) including ac�vi�es involving scheduling, tes�ng, training and supervision of mechanics and parts personnel. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Priori�zes vehicle repair requests, determines whether work needs to be contracted out or performed in house, schedules work and assigns daily work orders to division employees. • Monitors repair expenditures, manages outside vendor repairs, warranty repairs, and vehicle recalls. • Oversees staffing, parts, supplies, scheduling and plans for both intermediate and long- term needs of the division and customers. • Coordinates scheduling, repairs, and comple�on of body work for fleet. • Performs ini�al, in progress and final inspec�ons of work performed by the line mechanics. • Responds to service calls in the field and subs�tutes for Equipment Superintendent, Parts Clerk and Mechanics in emergency situa�ons. • Trains mechanics on various repair techniques and test equipment and establishes preven�ve maintenance schedules and check lists. • Monitors parts room inventory, �re inventory, tools, and personnel needs. • Maintains the currency of technical manuals and journals, as needed. • Monitors employees for compliance with safety rules and regula�ons. • Advises the Equipment Superintendent on technical aspects of vehicle specifica�ons. • Reviews and approves �mesheets, authorizes over�me, vaca�on �me and compensatory �me off for employees. • Communicates with other City divisions on vehicle statuses. • Conducts Equipment division mee�ngs, atends departmental staff and safety mee�ngs. • Creates and monitors work orders using computerized fleet management system. • Reviews completed work orders for accuracy, posts final charges and closes work orders. Updated: March 2024 • Assists in managing the City-owned fuel sites. • Manages the City taxi-cab inspec�on program. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in vehicle/equipment maintenance. • National Incident Management System Training ICS 100, ICS 200, IS 700, IS 800, ICS 300 within two years of hire. Class A Underground Storage Tank Operator certification within one year of hire. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or six years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to effec�vely supervise and mo�vate employees. • Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to read, measure and calculate types and sizes of materials needed for vehicle or equipment and repair and ability to reason amount of �me that will be used in the process. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to safely use tools and equipment such as emissions and batery testers, li�s and jacks, air condi�oning tes�ng systems, trucks, tractors, forkli�s and hand tools such as air tools and welding and cu�ng torches. • Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists. • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. • Knowledge of municipal vehicle and equipment maintenance opera�ons. • Skill in the reading and prac�cal applica�on of manuals, technical procedures, government regula�ons, schema�cs, blueprints, and other similar specifica�ons used by the City. Updated: March 2024 • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing daily tasks and assignments. May perform additional supervisory duties at the direction of the Department or Division Head to include disciplinary action, assisting with hiring or firing, and writing or delivering performance reviews.
