HomeMy WebLinkAboutAssistant Superintendent of ParksUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Assistant Superintendent of Parks Department: Parks & Recrea�on Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry FLSA: Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 27 Job Number: 2724 Job Summary Assists with organizing, direc�ng, and supervising the opera�onal, financial and personnel ac�vi�es involved in the maintenance and development of City parks, open space, natural areas, forestry/hor�cultural services and other related Parks and Recrea�on areas and facili�es. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Assists in es�ma�ng and coordina�ng labor, equipment and materials for the Parks, Forestry, Hor�culture, Athle�c Facili�es and Natural Areas opera�ons. • Maintains work records of ac�vi�es for Parks, Forestry, Hor�culture, Athle�c Facili�es and Natural Areas opera�ons. • Plans, assigns and reviews the work of staff in the construc�on and maintenance of Parks, Forestry, Hor�culture, Athle�c Facili�es and Natural Areas opera�ons. • Monitors equipment condi�ons and coordinates repair ac�vi�es. • Assists in the development of budget requests and division goals and monitors budget expenditures. • Reviews and approves staff �me entry in �me and atendance system. • Listens and responds to complaints, sugges�ons and ideas from the general public regarding division ac�vi�es. • Monitors comple�on of job assignments to ensure compliance with standards and instruc�ons and revises instruc�ons and �me frames as necessary. • Performs division safety checklist for each member and completes incident reports for on-the-job incidents/injuries. • Par�cipates in planning of new park facili�es, including plans related to design layout and equipment. • Assists with oversight and scheduling of various contracts and contracted work within the division and serves as department liaison to assigned construc�on projects. • Assists with overseeing inter-division/department coordina�on. • Compiles and monitors on-going safety related agenda and issues for monthly mee�ngs as well as required cer�fica�ons and compliance to OSHA regula�ons. • Serves as ac�ng Parks Superintendent when assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in park maintenance. • Valid State of Iowa driver's license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or six years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Cer�fied Parks and Recrea�on Professional. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, propor�ons, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to make analy�cal decisions based on department policy statements. • Ability to read and understand technical materials, reports and journals and governmental regula�ons. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists. • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. • Knowledge of park and community resources and the administra�on of principles, techniques, and methods of providing park facili�es. • Skill in planning, implementa�on, and technical knowledge of park management and maintaining posi�ve public rela�ons. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing daily tasks and assignments. May perform additional supervisory duties at the direction of the Department or Division Head to include disciplinary action, assisting with hiring or firing, and writing or delivering performance reviews.
