HomeMy WebLinkAboutCemetery SupervisorUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Cemetery Supervisor Department: Parks & Recrea�on Division: Cemetery Supervisor: Parks & Recrea�on Director FLSA: Exempt Civil Service: No Pay Grade: 27 Job Number: 2714 Job Summary Under direc�on, supervises and directs work crews, and par�cipates in the opera�on and maintenance of the City’s Oakland Cemetery and related areas. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Develops, maintains and coordinates policies for the opera�on of the division. • Listens and responds to complaints, sugges�ons and ideas from the general public regarding division ac�vi�es. • Supervises and par�cipates in year-round maintenance of cemetery grounds, buildings, and other assigned areas. • Prepares division budget and monitors expenditures; reviews and approves opera�ng expenditures. • Prepares and recommends cost es�mates for capital improvement projects; serves as project manager when assigned. • Maintains cemetery grounds and other related areas including construc�on, cement work, plumbing, electrical work and carpentry. • Provides for or performs repairs and maintenance of equipment, small tractors and atachments, gas powered lawn mowers, cord trimmers and edgers and chain saws. • Operates light and heavy trucks and tractors with a variety of atachments. • Directs and assists with internments and disinternments; prepares graves, sets up tents and chairs and assembles equipment for graveside services. • Shows and sells burial plots; maintains computerized records of lot sales, burials and loca�on of burials; assists public with deed transac�ons and lot repurchases. • Receives funeral service informa�on from funeral directors or family members; answers inquiries regarding general funeral services opera�ons. • Maintains proper records and prepares reports regarding personnel, purchases, projects, safety, etc. • Removes snow and ice and distributes salt and sand on cemetery roads, sidewalks and several other bridges and walks in assigned areas. • Responds to requests for family history informa�on. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in community park, cemetery, or grounds management. • State of Iowa Commercial Pes�cide Applicator Cer�fica�on within six months of hire. Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Supervisory experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, propor�ons, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to make analy�cal decisions based on department policy standards. • Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and measurements. • Ability to read and comprehend maps, City ordinances, and equipment manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists. • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. • Knowledge of cemetery rules and regula�ons. • Knowledge of general construc�on methods including basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical construc�on, and landscaping. • Knowledge of turf and ground maintenance. • Skill in opera�ng and maintaining heavy and light equipment used in cemetery maintenance. • Skill in scheduling, assigning and supervising the work of subordinates. • Skill in the use of hand and power tools. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include supervising direct reports including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; writing and delivering performance reviews; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and terminating employees.
