HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommunity Outreach Assistant - Immigrant & Refugee CommunitiesUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Community Outreach Assistant (Immigrant & Refugee Communi�es) Department: Police Division: Support Services Supervisor: Sergeant – Community Outreach FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 8 Job Number: 0819 Job Summary Under general direc�on, establishes and maintains rela�onships within the immigrant and refugee community which foster posi�ve communica�on and interac�ons between the Police Department and these popula�ons. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Maintains a posi�ve, ac�ve and visible presence throughout the community. • Atends various community events and outreach opportuni�es as a representa�ve of the Police Department. • Promotes the mission of the Police Department and provides excellence in service. • Par�cipates and assists the Community Outreach Assistant in planning, coordina�on, set up and presenta�on at community outreach events. • Provides community engagement, educa�on, and public speaking. • Engages with immigrant, refugee and under-represented groups within the community to create rela�onships, promote accessibility to police services and educate on police procedures. • Supports community outreach through crea�ve partnerships with local organiza�ons, agencies, businesses, educa�onal ins�tu�ons, faith communi�es and community partners with a focus on organiza�ons serving immigrant and refugee communi�es. • Develops, implements and administers community outreach programs, materials and ac�vi�es that support the mission and goals of the Police Department. • Responds to ques�ons and sugges�ons from the public, City staff and other agencies regarding community outreach and the Police Department’s mission. • Assists the Public Safety Informa�on Officer with incorpora�ng messaging to immigrant and refugee communi�es on the Police Department’s social media. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Updated: March 2024 Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on; or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in customer service, marke�ng, communica�ons, or working with refugee popula�ons. • Na�onal Crime Informa�on Center Cer�fica�on required within 6 months of hire. Crisis Interven�on Training required within twelve months of hire. Valid State of Iowa driver's license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in law enforcement or criminal jus�ce. Bilingual proficiency. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages. • Ability to establish effec�ve working rela�onships between department staff the public, and community partners. • Ability to iden�fy program priori�es, develop realis�c work plans, and work on mul�ple tasks. • Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to maintain inter- and intra- department confiden�ality. • Ability to prepare writen materials including records, reports and PowerPoint presenta�ons. • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists. • Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on. • Ability to work effec�vely with a diverse popula�on. • Ability to work in a team environment and independently. • Ability to write rou�ne reports and correspondence. • Knowledge and familiarity with website management and social media posts. • Knowledge of community and university resources. • Knowledge of the purpose of law enforcement and the criminal jus�ce system. • Skill in listening, writen and verbal communica�ons, problem solving and �me management. • Skill in marke�ng, public rela�ons, and communica�on. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook).
