Job Summary
Under general direc�on, assists the public and department personnel with handling
evidence/seized property, inventorying evidence/seized property, and providing quality control
and disposal of evidence/seized property. Also handles all lost and found property for the City.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Enters evidence informa�on into computer system, classifies informa�on, and manages
system.
• Ensures evidence is packaged to standard.
• Disposes of evidence, seized property, and found property.
• Prepares video and s�ll photographs of evidence.
• Tracks court cases involving evidence in care of City.
• Handles lost and found property.
• Returns evidence to proper owner.
• Tests panic alarm systems according to schedule.
• Completes alarm billing.
• Transports evidence to DCI lab.
• Destroys evidence according to guidelines.
• Provides customer service and acts as first point of contact for the Police Department for
walk-in residents.
• Takes and routes messages, dispatches non-emergency calls, answers radio, answers
ques�ons for the public by providing factual informa�on, handles inquiries and
complaints from walk-in residents.
• Assists department with accredita�on process.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.

Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school educa�on or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or
training; or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in
customer service and computer use.
• Cardiopulmonary resuscita�on and automated external defibrillator cer�fica�on within
one year of hire. Na�onal Crime Informa�on Center Cer�fica�on within six months of
hire. Notary Public required within one year of hire. Valid State of Iowa driver's license
with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background
check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school diploma or G.E.D. and one year of related experience or training; or
equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in law enforcement or
emergency dispatch.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to add, subtract, mul�ply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common frac�ons, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved
writen or oral instruc�ons.
• Ability to compute rate, ra�o, and percent.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized
situa�ons.
• Ability to effec�vely present informa�on in one-on-one and small group situa�ons to
customers, clients, and other employees of the organiza�on.
• Ability to handle, accurately count and deposit large sums of currency.
• Ability to handle, package and transport fragile, expensive and irreplaceable
evidence/seized property so as to maintain the integrity, value and chain of custody of
these items.
• Ability to operate police radio and police vehicles.
• Ability to organize evidence/seized property using current storage procedures, protocols
and computer programs.
• Ability to prepare writen incident reports and other correspondences.
• Ability to read and understand writen materials including police reports, traffic cita�ons
and warrants.
• Ability to read and understand writen materials, maps, and street signs in order to
record work ac�vi�es, keep records, or work with a computer.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to understand maps and provide direc�ons to the public or officers.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Knowledge of City and county street loca�ons.
• Knowledge of department evidence/seized property protocols.
• Knowledge of department’s records management system.

• Knowledge of parking and traffic regula�ons.
• Skill in opera�ng various radio and telephone equipment as well as computer assisted
dispatch terminals, some�mes under stressful condi�ons.
• Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
• Skill in using tools and equipment used in minor auto modifica�ons.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.
