HomeMy WebLinkAboutConstruction Inspector IUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Construc�on Inspector I Department: Public Works Division: Engineering Supervisor: City Engineer FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 9 Job Number: 0905 Job Summary Under general direc�on, conducts on-site inspec�ons related to subdivision improvements, sidewalk repair program and Public Works projects, including materials tes�ng and recordkeeping. Prescribes ac�on for conformance to code, standards, plans and specifica�ons. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Conducts or assists on-site inspec�ons of construc�on projects including storm sewers, water mains, sanitary sewers, paving, sidewalks, form work, rebar placement and erosion control and provides for quality assurance on projects and project compliance with City codes and ordinances. • Iden�fies noncompliance issues associated with specifica�ons and the inspected construc�on areas and informs appropriate par�es of lack of compliance with City standards. • Iden�fies construc�on plan requirements needing adjustments to meet field condi�ons and coordinates these adjustments with the contractor and project engineer. • Compiles extensive field notes detailing contractors' work and reports progress; tracks billings for inspec�on hours, maintains files and reports. • Performs dra�ing work as needed, including record drawings of completed projects. • Assists in prepara�on of pay es�mates, conducts concrete tests and coordinates with consultants to complete field tests. • Provides for public safety at construc�on site and responds to ques�ons and complaints from the public. • Meets with contractors and engineers regarding projects and approves alternate construc�on methods. • Conducts stormwater pollu�ons protec�on inspec�ons to ensure state and federal permi�ng requirements. • Assists survey crew on projects, as assigned. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Updated: March 2024 Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in heavy construction or related. • Valid State of Iowa driver's license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. • State of Iowa Department of Transportation certifications in Level 1 and 2 Aggregate, Level 1 PCC and Level 1 HMA. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to detect defec�ve materials and workmanship. • Ability to perform mathema�cal func�ons in order to review contractor compliance with standards. • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifica�ons, blueprints, easement documents, design manuals, pay es�mates and textbooks, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to record concise field notes and report progress. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of the public or employees of organiza�on. • Ability to write rou�ne reports and correspondence. • Knowledge of civil engineering principles. • Knowledge of construc�on methods, materials, plans and specifica�ons. • Knowledge of surveying methods. • Skill in dra�ing and surveying. • Skill in the use of a variety of machines, including personal computers, aggregate tes�ng equipment, air meter and slump cone. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook) and various engineering design so�ware.
