HomeMy WebLinkAboutDevelopment SpecialistUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Development Specialist Department: Senior Center Division: Senior Center Supervisor: Senior Center Coordinator FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 14 Job Number: 1416 Job Summary Under minimal direc�on and in collabora�on with Senior Center staff, develops and implements a successful fundraising campaign for the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center. Implements, evaluates and refines as necessary a comprehensive fundraising program that incorporates all available technology. Works with the Senior Center staff, Board members of Friends of the Senior Center, Volunteers, and Iowa City leaders to iden�fy, develop plans to raise funds to address priority needs that assure the short-term and long-term viability of the Senior Center. Maintains and manages a donor database to assure accurate, complete and accessible demographic and giving informa�on. Produces comprehensive quarterly reports of fundraising ac�vi�es and accomplishments to the Senior Center Coordinator. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Works with the founda�on/Friends of the Senior Center board of directors to ensure that mission of founda�on is carried out. • Cul�vates and enhances contacts with community leaders and key contributors to increase support and raises funds for the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center Services. • Coordinates all fund-raising efforts, develops, prepares, and coordinates all fundraising materials, reports and schedules general correspondence, and agendas. • Receives and acknowledges all contribu�ons, grants, bequests, and gi�s-in-kind, maintains accurate gi� records and financial statements for founda�on. • Prepares grant applica�ons and reports with assistance from other Senior Center staff. • Prepares and administers Friends of Iowa City Senior Center budgets and monitors expenditures of budget. • Carries out established policies and procedures regarding safety and security of patrons and fellow staff members. • Prepares monthly reports on development ac�vi�es for founda�on board of directors. • Helps plan and carries out emergency procedures. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and two years of related experience; or six years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Degree in Communica�on, Public Rela�ons, Marke�ng, Social Work or related. • Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and three to five years of related experience; or seven years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in fundraising. • Cer�fica�on in CPR and the use of an external automated defibrillator. Other Requirements – Cer�ficates/Licensures Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to add, subtract, mul�ply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common frac�ons, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to build and maintain rela�onships with people and organiza�ons. • Ability to compile valid and reliable reports on fundraising ac�vi�es using the donor database and other sources. • Ability to compute rate, ra�o, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to objec�vely evaluate ac�vi�es in rela�on to City, the Senior Center and Friends of the Senior Center fundraising goals and modify plans when needed. • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on. • Ability to write rou�ne reports and correspondence. • Knowledge and familiarity with the community and university resources. • Skill in administra�on and fundraising. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook) and use of databases.
