Job Summary
Under general direc�on, installs, repairs and maintains electronic traffic controllers, vehicle and
pedestrian detec�on equipment, video monitoring equipment, computer systems and other
hardware used in traffic control. Installs and maintains streetlights and collects traffic count data
as needed.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Inspects and performs preven�ve maintenance; maintains and repairs traffic control
hardware, devices and wiring.
• Performs opera�onal checks on traffic control and street ligh�ng systems; uses technical
equipment applica�ons and so�ware applica�ons specific to equipment.
• Observes func�ons of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and need for
adjustments, reloca�on or replacement.
• Maintains and repairs street ligh�ng hardware and wiring.
• Installs new and repairs exis�ng traffic and pedestrian signal heads and modules, poles,
conduit, wiring, cameras, power supplies, and traffic signal controllers.
• Operates and makes changes to computer/traffic related so�ware/firmware.
• Updates Cartegraph and ArcGis asset management system.
• Maintains accurate records of work performed including maintenance, chargebacks,
accidents and purchases.
• Operates computer to perform various tasks including traffic control, recordkeeping and
email.
• Assists with other divisional electrical needs.
• Performs emergency sign repair.
• Performs general housekeeping, shop and vehicle maintenance.
• Performs u�lity loca�ons for Traffic Engineering infrastructure.
• Ensures that electrical work on behalf of the City is done in compliance with local, state
and na�onal codes.
• Answers public ques�ons.

• Orders supplies and stocks items to maintain inventory, orders replacement items.
• Reviews proposed plans for traffic and street ligh�ng.
• Performs banner change outs and installa�on.
• Performs on-call du�es, as assigned; responds to emergency calls for repairs of traffic
signals and streetlights.
• Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the
workplace and community.
• Performs other du�es as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related
experience; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience. Degree as Electrician. Experience in electrical work.
• Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on
permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license
with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng
requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must
live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of
appointment to the posi�on. Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
• State of Iowa Cer�fied Journeyman Electrician License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in
writen, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions,
propor�ons, percentage.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situa�ons.
• Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons, measure and calculate electrical
formulas.
• Ability to prepare writen records, rou�ne reports, and �me sheets.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, schema�cs, technical manuals, safety
rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on.
• Knowledge of City and Na�onal codes and the rules and standards pertaining to the
electrical construc�on and the maintenance of electrical equipment.
• Knowledge of the theory, prac�ce and equipment used in electrical trade.

• Skill in the use of a pla�orm li� truck, a u�lity truck and various hand and power tools.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.
