HomeMy WebLinkAboutElectronics Technician - Traffic EngineeringUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Electronics Technician – Traffic Engineering Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traffic Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 13 Job Number: 1313 Job Summary Under direc�on, installs, repairs and maintains electronic traffic controllers, vehicle and pedestrian detec�on equipment, video monitoring equipment, computer systems and other hardware used in traffic control. Installs and maintains streetlights and collects traffic count data as needed. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Conducts rou�ne preven�ve maintenance on traffic control equipment. • Troubleshoots and repairs electronic traffic controllers, loop amps, video detec�on equipment, video monitoring cameras and other hardware used in traffic control. • Confirms fiber communica�ons are working for intersec�ons and cameras. • Operates a pla�orm li� truck, a u�lity truck, bobcat, concrete saw, backhoes and boom truck. • Repairs and installs streetlights including lamp, ballast, pole and underground electrical wiring. • Perform maintenance, repairs, installa�ons and upgrades for traffic signals, including bases, conduit, wire, poles and controller cabinet. • Adjust signal �mings and update coordina�on �mings in Tac�cs. • Collects traffic count data with tube counters and manual counters as needed; enters informa�on on computer; prepares graphs; maintains counter equipment. • Locates City u�li�es. • Reviews plans for capital improvement. • Orders traffic control parts and ensures materials are available for jobsite. • Updates Cartegraph and ArcGis asset management system. • Responds to emergency calls regarding traffic control devices, equipment and damaged signs. • Organizes and leads traffic engineering employees in problem solving, answers technical ques�ons. • Coordinates and performs banner change outs and installa�on. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree as an Electrician. Experience in electrical work. • Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. National Incident Management System Training ICS 100, IS 700 within two years of hire. Must be 18 years of age. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. • State of Iowa Cer�fied Journeyman Electrician License. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to calculate electrical and electronic wire size, amp loading, volt drop and other proper�es. Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and solve electronic equa�ons. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to prepare writen job records, rou�ne reports, and graph data for traffic data. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, schema�cs, technical manuals, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists. • Knowledge of City and Na�onal codes and the rules and standards pertaining to the electrical construc�on and the maintenance of electrical equipment. • Knowledge of digital and microprocessor-based unit. • Knowledge of the theory, prac�ce and equipment used in electrical trade. Updated: March 2024 • Skill in opera�ng heavy equipment including pla�orm li� truck, u�lity van, bobcat, concrete saw, backhoes and boom truck. • Skill in the use of hand and power tools. • Skill in use of test equipment and troubleshoo�ng electrical and electronic malfunc�ons. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook) and interface with traffic control equipment. Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance review.
