HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWI - Water Customer ServiceUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Maintenance Worker I – Water Customer Service Department: Public Works Division: Water Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Water / Water Superintendent FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 3 Job Number: 0312 Job Summary Under immediate direc�on, reads meters, performs water taps and related water maintenance distribu�on and service work including inspec�on and maintenance of meters, works with contractors to repair water systems and locate service lines and mains. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Inspects, maintains and changes water meters. • Works with contractors to repair water systems and provides locates service lines, mains, and fiber op�cs, completes a posi�ve response for entry into the Iowa ONE Call system. • Assists in loca�ng, digging and measuring water lines and mains; handles accidental water emergencies. • Assists in the maintenance of malfunc�oning water meters. • Checks meter readings (remotely and manually), reads meters for resets, final billings and monthly routes. • Inves�gates work orders from the water metering system; determines and performs repairs needed; changes leaky or stopped water meters. • Performs emergency du�es related to water main breaks; responds to a�er-hour emergency calls; performs on-call du�es as assigned. • Cards and shuts off water service for nonpayment of bills, unauthorized service, insufficient funds and payment arrangements not met. • Performs water taps on duc�le and plas�c mains, inspects newly installed water meters for City specifica�ons by contractors. • Responds to emergency calls for distribu�on and water service. • Operates heavy equipment including dump truck and backhoe. • Performs tapping machine maintenance and tap maintenance inventory, orders machine parts. • Contacts public on regular basis to share informa�on, resolve complaints or solve problems. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in water system maintenance or related. • State of Iowa DNR Grade I Water Distribu�on Cer�ficate preferred or required within 3 years of hire. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved writen or oral instruc�ons. • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on in one-on-one and small group situa�ons to customers, clients, and other employees of the organiza�on. • Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and calculate water consump�on when checking for leaks. • Ability to read technical materials and maps to locate underground u�li�es and prepare writen log sheets and records. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to work on-call. • Ability to write simple correspondence. • Knowledge of electrical current flow, conductors and grounds. • Knowledge of meter reading devices and maintenance and repair procedures. • Knowledge of water distribu�on system and water services. • Skills in the use of hand and power tools.
