HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - ParksUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Maintenance Worker II – Parks Department: Parks & Recrea�on Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 5 Job Number: 0502 Job Summary Under general direc�on, performs a variety of tasks in the repair and maintenance of parks and other public facili�es. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Performs all du�es in a safe manner and may par�cipate on the safety commitee. • Answers ques�ons and provides informa�on to the public. • Mows, mulches, trims, chips trees and shrubs, landscapes, and lays sod. • Maintains and repairs park areas and facili�es including sports fields and ponds. • Assists in work involving pain�ng, carpentry, cement work, electrical, plumbing, hydraulic, building siding, roof shingles, welding, cu�ng torch, fabrica�on or other trade work. • Operates trucks, rotary mowers and tractors, occasionally operates backhoes, loaders and other specialized equipment. • Assists in snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm damage clean-up and ice rink maintenance. • Performs minor mechanical repairs, performs small engine repair. • Maintains tools, tractors, mowers, and equipment. • Installs snow removal equipment on tractors. • Cleans all restrooms, shops, facili�es, and areas within the Parks Department. • Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments. • Assists other divisions, contractors and agencies as needed. • Responds to storm or other emergencies, as needed. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in park Updated: March 2024 maintenance. • Forkli� and backhoe cer�fica�on within proba�onary period. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to follow oral and writen instruc�ons. • Ability to navigate a small boat for pond clean up. • Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and take measurements. • Ability to read and understand work orders, park rules, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manual, and maintain writen job records. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on. • Ability to write rou�ne reports and correspondence. • Knowledge of custodial materials and equipment. • Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry and general construc�on methods. • Skill in the opera�on of various cleaning equipment including pool vacuums, floor scrubbers and wet vacuums, transfer pumps, lawn mowers, and snow blower. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
