HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - StreetsUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Maintenance Worker II – Streets Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traffic Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 8 Job Number: 0806 Job Summary Under general direc�on, operates a variety of light and heavy equipment used in the maintenance of City streets. Performs street construc�on and maintenance tasks. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Constructs and repairs concrete and asphalt streets, driveways, sidewalks, catch basins, curbs, and guters. • Sets traffic control devices at worksites, special events, and in emergency situa�ons, perform flagging duty. • Operates light and heavy equipment in the maintenance of City streets, removes sec�ons of cement and asphalt in City streets, replaces sec�ons with concrete or asphalt using forms and calcula�ng grades. • Removes leaves and debris from roadways in very dusty condi�ons, cuts brush in extreme temperatures. • Performs and crack sealing du�es. • Enters and tracks data and informa�on into asset management system and reconciles purchase card statements. • Installs new street signs and repairs exis�ng signs that are faded or damaged. • Maintains pavement markings including street markings, parking stalls, crosswalks, school crossings and stop bars. • Operates equipment for snow and ice removal on City streets including trucks, sanders, and end loader. • Operates street sweepers to clean streets. • Performs indoor and outdoor remodeling. • Maintains and inspects equipment (checks equipment, fluids and �res daily, inspects snowplows weekly during snow season) and cleans interior and exterior of vehicles and equipment when needed. • Par�cipates in leaf removal program, operates leaf machine. • Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in construction and maintenance. • Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to calculate cubic yards and tons to fill cement and asphalt voids, ability to add, subtract, mul�ply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common frac�ons, and decimals, ability to calculate figures and amounts such as propor�ons, percentages, area. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on in one-on-one and small group situa�ons to customers and other employees of the organiza�on. • Ability to prepare writen work records. • Ability to read and comprehend assignment sheets, route maps, work instruc�on and equipment maintenance manuals. • Ability to read and understand technical materials and manuals. • Ability to read tape measure to cut lumber or figure area to order materials. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to weld and fabricate. • Knowledge of street construc�on and maintenance procedures. Updated: March 2024 • Skill in the opera�on of light and heavy equipment including trucks, end loaders, sanders, backhoe, jack hammers, snow removal equipment and various hand tools. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
