Job Summary
Under general direc�on, serves as a lead worker in performing construc�on, maintenance and
repairs to municipal park equipment, playground equipment, facili�es, grounds and other
assigned areas.
Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Answers ques�ons and provides informa�on to the public.
• Operates light and heavy duty trucks, skid steer, backhoe, tractors, loaders, rotary and
gang mowers, road graders, specialized equipment, and a variety of power hand tools
used in assigned work.
• Performs snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm
damage clean-up and ice rink maintenance.
• Constructs, demolishes, repairs and paints shelters, restrooms, picnic tables, benches,
wood and stone retaining walls, signs, trails, dikes, storm drains, bridges and other
facili�es and equipment.
• Performs building maintenance tasks at parks and other City facili�es which may include
general and finish carpentry, cement work, basic plumbing, electrical repair and
installa�on, welding, metal fabrica�on and building construc�on and repairs.
• Installs playground equipment and repairs exis�ng playground equipment and removes
and disposes of old play equipment.
• Mows, mulches, trims, chips trees and shrubs, landscapes, and lays sod.
• Cleans all restrooms, shops, facili�es, and areas within the Parks Department.
• Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments.
• Assists other divisions, contractors and agencies as needed.
• Maintains and repairs park areas and facili�es including sports fields and ponds.
• Performs preventa�ve maintenance and small repair on equipment.
• Purchases building and construc�on supplies as needed according to divisional and City
purchasing policies.
• Responds to storms and other emergencies.

Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in
park maintenance.
• Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on
permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license
with air brake endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng
requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must
pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
• Cer�fied Playground Safety Inspector Cer�fica�on.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in
writen, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situa�ons.
• Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and calculate measurements for
building supplies.
• Ability to prepare writen work sheet reports.
• Ability to read and interpret shop manuals and play equipment instruc�ons, safety rules,
opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es.
• Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on.
• Knowledge of proper mixing procedures for chemical applica�ons.
• Skill at advanced level and knowledge of carpentry, building construc�on and
maintenance, welding, concrete forming.
• Skill in the opera�on of heavy equipment and the use of hand and power tools.
• Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).

insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves
