HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWIII - Water ServiceUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Maintenance Worker III – Water Service Department: Public Works Division: Water Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Water / Water Superintendent FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 8 Job Number: 0817 Job Summary Under general direc�on, performs loca�on of underground water and fiber u�li�es, water taps and related water customer service work. Inves�gates customer service complaints. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Serves as lead worker for work crews. • Checks meter readings; reads meters for resets and final billings. • Inves�gates work orders ini�ated by meter readers for malfunc�ons; determines and makes needed repairs. • Inspects newly installed water meters for City specifica�ons; changes leaky or stopped water meters. • Locates underground water u�li�es and charts up-to-date measurements on stop valves and mains. • Locates underground fiber op�c u�li�es and charts up-to-date measurements on fiber op�c infrastructure; ensures that new water and fiber installa�on traces for sign off on overall project comple�on. • Cards and shuts off water service for non-payment of bills, unauthorized service, insufficient fund checks and for payment arrangements not met. • May perform water taps on duc�le, iron and plas�c mains. • Provides informa�on and assistance to customers regarding City u�lity services; assists customers in resolving problems related to customer accounts or City procedures; assists plumbers and contractors with sizing water meter and meter installa�ons on new installs. • Inves�gates customer complaints of leaks, high bills and water quality; inspects fixtures and determines source of leaks, low pressure and other problems. • Assists in training meter readers. • Implements and monitors back flow preven�on tester program, as assigned. • Completes water main and fiber standbys. • Assists distribu�on staff with final flushing and pressure tes�ng on new water main and service installa�ons. Updated: March 2024 • Implements and maintains meter system, including meter shop and inventory; compiles sta�s�cs of past to determine number of meters, MIUs and brass service parts to be ordered; orders parts as needed; reconciles orders to appropriate accounts. • Trains and assists other locators for residen�al, industrial and City projects, as assigned. • Performs emergency du�es related to water main breaks and repairs to water system; responds to a�er-hour emergency calls. • Operates backhoe, concrete breaker, and dump trucks. • Completes paperwork in a �mely manner to document daily projects, ac�vi�es, and appointments. • U�lizes computer applica�ons for inventory, data entry, scheduling, contac�ng other City departments and special projects as needed. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in water services, water distribution, installation, or repair. • State of Iowa DNR Grade II Water Distribu�on Cer�ficate. Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to perform basic mathema�cal calcula�ons and calculate water consump�on when checking for leaks. • Ability to prepare writen log sheets, rou�ne reports, and records. Updated: March 2024 • Ability to read technical materials and maps to locate underground u�li�es, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on. • Knowledge of electrical current flow, conductors and grounds. • Knowledge of meter reading devices and maintenance and repair procedures. • Knowledge of water distribu�on system and water services. • Skill in the use of hand and power tools. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook).
