HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperations Supervisor - BUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Opera�ons Supervisor Department: Transporta�on Services Division: Administra�on Supervisor: Transporta�on Services Director FLSA: Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 27 Job Number: 2709 Job Summary Under the direc�on of the Transporta�on Services Director, ensures delivery of safe, efficient and convenient transporta�on services for the community. Supervises the opera�onal, financial and personnel ac�vi�es of Iowa City Transit. Responsible for personnel management, transit operator deployment, opera�ons monitoring, dispatching, resolu�on of customer inquiries, and related work as assigned. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Develops and delivers ongoing opera�onal training. • Dispatches, directs and supports daily opera�ons. • Organizes and supervises division workflow. • Responds to employee concerns. • Supervises opera�ons to ensure policy and schedule adherence. • Coordinates service disrup�ons caused by weather and traffic. • Provides recommenda�ons for budget planning, oversees expenditures and revenues. • Prepares weekly report of ac�vi�es for Department Director and Associate Director. • Assists in planning for service expansion and/or reduc�on and changes in service delivery methods. • Schedules employees to cover vacant shi�s, vaca�ons and last-minute absences. • Completes employee �me records and reconciles with scheduled hours. • Records complaints and compiles data for repor�ng purposes. • Maintains various opera�ng sta�s�cs; compiles daily/monthly/annual reports. • Interacts with other City departments and responds to requests for informa�on. • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal policies and programs. • Drives transit routes as needed. • Resolves customer conflicts and assists with daily customer interac�ons. • Assists with development of division staff schedules and approves employee �me off requests considering division needs and ensures division has adequate coverage during expected and unexpected absences. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Degree in Business, Accoun�ng, Management, or related. • Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brakes and passenger endorsement required within 90 days of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. A pre-employment drug screen is. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in accoun�ng. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to add, subtract, mul�ply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common frac�ons, and decimals. • Ability to compute rate, ra�o, and percent. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on and respond to ques�ons from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to learn and apply complex policies and procedures. • Ability to perform mathema�cal calcula�ons necessary to perform payroll func�ons and basic bookkeeping func�ons. • Ability to read and understand writen materials and maps, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regula�ons. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists. • Ability to supervise and mo�vate employees. • Ability to work in a team environment. • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing daily tasks and assignments.
