HomeMy WebLinkAboutRecreation Program SupervisorUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Recrea�on Program Supervisor Department: Parks & Recrea�on Division: Recrea�on Supervisor: Recrea�on Superintendent FLSA: Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 14 Job Number: 1402 Job Summary Under general direc�on, performs professional du�es which involve planning, managing, supervising and promo�ng a broad range of recrea�on programs for the general public including arts, socializa�on, science and nature, sports, aqua�cs, wellness, and special events, including programs for persons with disabili�es and youth-at-risk. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Establishes Recrea�on program content for all ages in areas such as sports and wellness programs, arts and social programs, youth-at-risk ac�vi�es, special events, aqua�cs and special popula�ons. • Recommends policies and establishes processes, goals and objec�ves. • Interprets and enforces department rules and regula�ons for staff and public. • Evaluates programs and recommends improvements. • Coordinates Recrea�on ac�vi�es and services. • Schedules work ac�vi�es and approves hire forms and �me records. • Conducts staff mee�ngs with subordinates. • Orders needed recrea�onal supplies and equipment. • Stores and maintains inventory. • Responds to inquiries and special requests from public or other City employees regarding Recrea�on programs and ac�vi�es. • Prepares and monitors program budget and oversees purchase of equipment and supplies. • Recommends fees and charges and monitors revenue income. • Secures and schedules numerous departmental facili�es and outside facili�es. • Interacts and serves as liaison to community organiza�ons, agencies, affiliate groups and special interest groups. • Develops and delivers public presenta�ons regarding Recrea�on services and programs to various community groups. • Atends selected mee�ngs of the Parks & Recrea�on Commission to give oral reports. Updated: March 2024 • Prepares and maintains past and current ac�vity records, sta�s�cal program reports and other various reports. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or six years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Recreation Administration, Leisure Studies, or related. Recreation programming experience. • Parks and Recrea�on Professional Cer�fica�on within one year of hire. First aid, cardiopulmonary resuscita�on, automated external defibrillator cer�fica�on, universal precau�ons and blood borne pathogens within six months of hire. Valid State of Iowa driver's license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass a criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and three to five years of related experience; or seven years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, propor�ons, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. • Ability to interpret a variety of instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to operate office and recrea�on equipment. • Ability to prepare writen materials including records, reports and promo�onal materials. • Ability to read and interpret reports and journals, safety rules, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to solve prac�cal problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situa�ons where only limited standardiza�on exists. • Ability to speak effec�vely before groups of customers or employees of organiza�on. • Ability to supervise large numbers of employees working at mul�ple sites. • Knowledge of community organiza�ons and resources. • Knowledge of the principles, rules, materials, equipment of sports and recrea�onal ac�vi�es. • Skill in facility and personnel management. • Skill in the techniques of supervision to plan, assign, coordinate, direct, and monitor recrea�onal programs. Updated: March 2024 • Skill in using computers and applicable so�ware applica�ons (Microso� Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to temporary/hourly, seasonal, or work-study staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance review.
