HomeMy WebLinkAboutSigns & Pavement Markings TechnicianUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Signs & Pavement Markings Technician Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traffic Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 7 Job Number: 0705 Job Summary Under general direc�on of Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering, coordinates sign making, sign installa�on, sign inventory, sign retro reflec�vity, temporary traffic control and pavement marking program. Operates light and heavy equipment. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Plans, coordinates, and performs fabrica�on, installa�on, remove, repair of street signs, pavement markings, traffic control and emergency situa�ons for city infrastructure in according with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards. • Organizes work orders for sign inventory and street markers, sign repair and sign installa�on; orders all appropriate materials to perform work; enters sign informa�on into computer database system, may include GIS; submits locates as needed. • Maintains street markings, crosswalks, school crossing and stop bar pain�ng. • Follows up on sign repairs and billing for damaged signs due to accidents, the�, or vandalism. • Coordinates with City departments, Metropolitan Planning Organiza�on of Johnson County (MPOJC), University of Iowa, and outside contractors on public and private construc�on projects for planning of signage, sign removal and sign installa�on. • Atends pre-construc�on mee�ngs when needed. • Reviews plans for signs and striping improvements. • Assigns and monitors permanent and hourly workers on crew. • Coordinates and performs banner change outs and installa�on. • Assists in prepara�on for special events such as road races, parades and block par�es. • Hauls materials to and from sites. • Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment dump truck, end loaders, sanders, snowplow, backhoes, tamper, air compressors with jack hammers, skid loaders, bucket truck, crane, pain�ng equipment, leaf equipment and various hand tools. • Removes leaves and debris from roadways in very dusty condi�ons, cuts brush in extreme temperatures. Updated: March 2024 • Removes snow and ice from roadways during winter months. • Cleans, maintains and constructs catch basins and storm drains on streets and creeks. • Maintains and inspects equipment (checks equipment, fluids, and �res daily, inspects snowplows weekly during snow season) and cleans interior and exterior of vehicles and equipment when needed. • Assists with all street maintenance opera�ons performed by street maintenance workers. • Mixes salt and sand. • Performs on-call du�es. • Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and community. • Performs other du�es as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in street construction and maintenance. • Sa�sfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruc�on permit upon first day in posi�on. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug tes�ng requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the posi�on. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in sign making, installation, and repair. One year of pavement marking and striping experience. • ATSSA certified in Temporary Traffic Control. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to effec�vely present informa�on in one-on-one and small group situa�ons to customers and other employees of the organiza�on. • Ability to prepare writen work records. • Ability to read a tape measure to cut lumber or figure area to order materials, ability to calculate figures and amounts such as propor�ons, percentages, area, and circumference. Updated: March 2024 • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, MUTCD manual, opera�ng and maintenance instruc�ons, and procedure manuals. • Ability to read and comprehend route maps and work instruc�ons. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Knowledge of street construc�on and maintenance procedures. • Skill in the opera�on of light and heavy equipment including trucks, end loaders, sanders, backhoe, jack hammers, snow removal equipment and various hand tools. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
