HomeMy WebLinkAboutVictim Services CoordinatorUpdated: March 2024 CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Posi�on Title: Vic�m Services Coordinator Department: Police Division: Field Opera�ons Supervisor: Police Lieutenant FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 11 Job Number: 1116 Job Summary Works as part of the Police Department Field Opera�ons Division to provide support and serve as a liaison between law enforcement, various support service providers and vic�ms/survivors of crime. Essen�al Job Du�es and Responsibili�es The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Builds connec�ons and partnerships with local community programs that provide services to vic�ms of crimes. • Works as a liaison between crime vic�ms, the Iowa City Police Department, community en��es and leaders, and other helping professionals to coordinate services and vic�m care. • Conducts regular and reasonable follow-up with vic�ms and their supporters. • Engages in crisis interven�on and sensi�ve listening of vic�ms and their supporters. • Provides vic�ms and their families with informa�on on the criminal jus�ce system. • Coordinates resources from local, regional, and na�onal vic�m services organiza�ons, including the Iowa Crime Vic�m Compensa�on Program. • Atends home visits with officers and detec�ves to assist vic�ms as needed. • Supports inves�ga�ve and prosecutorial efforts by maintaining communica�on with vic�ms of crime and serving as a liaison to vic�ms and survivors of crime during an inves�ga�on and/or prosecu�on. • Provides meaningful par�cipa�on in community coordinated groups and efforts to respond to vic�ms of crime. • Provides informa�on to the Iowa City Police Department and the public safety community on local community programs that provide services to vic�ms of crime and the impact of crime on vic�ms and their supporters. • Educates community members, including immigrants, refugees, deaf individuals and other underserved popula�ons on vic�ms’ rights through community partnerships, using interpreta�on services when needed. • Writes narra�ve reports documen�ng services and communica�on for police records. • Compiles and maintains data, facilita�ng designated research efforts. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Degree in sociology or related. Experience in providing vic�m support services. • Valid State of Iowa driver's license with sa�sfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educa�onal ins�tu�on and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combina�on of educa�on and experience. Experience in working with mul�cultural popula�ons. Bilingual ability. Knowledge, Skills, and Abili�es • Ability to add, subtract, mul�ply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common frac�ons, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruc�ons furnished in writen, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to compute rate, ra�o, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa�ons. • Ability to establish effec�ve working rela�onships between departmental staff, the public, and community partners. • Ability to iden�fy program priori�es, develop realis�c work plans, and work on mul�ple tasks. • Ability to provide an enthusias�c and progressive approach to enhancing law enforcement services to all vic�ms of crime. • Ability to read and comprehend simple instruc�ons, short correspondence, and memos. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out du�es. • Ability to u�lize a trauma-informed and vic�m-centered approach, and work to bolster rela�onships with community partners while developing promising prac�ces internally by working closely with administrators, detec�ves, and patrol officers. • Ability to work effec�vely and connect with diverse communi�es. • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently. • Ability to write simple correspondence and reports. • Knowledge of community and University resources available to vic�m for shelter, treatment, educa�on, legal assistance, and financial aid. • Knowledge of the criminal jus�ce system process and vic�ms’ rights.
